Introduction
People are different, we see it everyday in everything. There is always that friend who is always in a rush, no matter what he’s on. Eventually he gets what he’s interested in… but are you sure he’s doing better than the friend that examinate the whole thing? The one that even if he needs a jacket will look in 10 different stores in 10 different places and in 10 different days? The one that looks for the best deal even if it’s saving a dollar? It’s not about the money nor about the object, it’s about the mental part.
When I was younger I admit I was the rushing type of person. That feeling when you discover new things, you want to try them all and they are all different from each other. You setup all of them and you “expect” a quick earning, often without investing a cent. The feeling when you see a “method” or a book that GUARANTEE earnings. You tend to spend the little money you have, as a young student, on stuff you consider good or you read it is.
Do you think entepreneurs are idiots who worked their asses off when they could just buy an ebook and make 100k/day?
It’s time to revaluate your priorities.
The first steps
Let’s clear up things: do you want to make a living or earn the money for your steam games?
I personally run a business with my family that makes more than you think a year and put up my online business in the latest year. I admit it is easy for me now, I just check if it’s all working and do the necessary maintenance, rest of the time is free and I just cash in. You can’t even think about all the sweat and sleepless nights I’ve been through to achieve this.
The hardest thing is to setup your mind.
Brainstorming:
Do you have an idea? Take a sheet of paper, a pen and throw the fucking phone at the wall, none has to distract you from what you are doing. Write down everything that you can think of (related of course). Connect the things, group them and related them. Think of the thousands of possible shades.
Study:
You have your idea: study it. Gather infos about the topic, look behind every corner and check every little hole: we don't want to copy/clone an existing thing. We aim to be unique and/or the best.
Schematize:
Once you have wrote down all you could think of, prepare a scheme. Select the things, from the top to the little things, just because a car without a screw can still run it doesn't mean it 100% correct and supposed to be like that. And we aim to the 101%.
Planning:
A good business requires an even better planning. Companies often plan their works 2+ years in advance. Plan the start of your business, plan everything! Maintenance, costs, accidents, bad days, even bad months. You must have a plan.
Try:
Sometimes you don't have time to think, you have to jump. This is not the case, none is chasing us, we have all the time we want.
This depends on the topic but always try before the final release.
Surveys:
If the topic requires a continue interaction by people, do surveys about it. Check what people want. Even games should have taught you that the most important thing is the community feedback and suggestions.
Accept critics:
Critics are friends. Critics are good. You must learn to love critics and don't let them demoralize you! They should do the opposite, they make you work harder to improve and shut people up.
Beware that there will always be critics, no matter how good, how perfect and awesome you are: critics are always there.
Emotions:
Not less important (actually the most): do not let emotions interfere with your work. Emotions are BANNED.
It doesn't exist "I feel it'll work". We base ourself on documented facts, tangible things, not "feelings".
Relax:
You will work hard and that's guaranteed but please don't stress too much, it'd be just bad for both you and your work. Have fun, go out, read and relax. I personally have fun going around the net and I also run this little service of traffic on hf which keeps me distracted (will close soon
Partners:
I know the feeling of trusting none but let's think about it.
Take music for example, one man can play great and be successful but a band, and by band i mean a real band were they are all like brothers, can make it better. They are doing what you can't do because of lack of knowledge. You can be a genius but you can't know everything. A partner could do the things that you can't: you can play the guitar but add a bass and listen which is better (for instance). I'm not telling you to give more trust, you only trust yourself. But hey, i couldn't make what I have now without my buddy!
Passion:
Be passionate about what you do. A little simple but often forgotten tip. You can study and read, read and read again.. eventually you learn. Try to think about the topic instead of jumping on it. Take your time, and UNDERSTAND the topic. Once you understand how a thing works, you don't need to study it because you actually know the mechanics, the principles that make it works. For instance take physics: holy mother of god, good luck to read and learn everything. Nothing you can't do but my approach is the analysis of the topic (this relates to the next point).
Open mind:
(This is related to the previous point "Passion")
Don't limit yourself and open wide your mind like it was Scarlett Johansson (really really wide then). Let's bring back the example of studying physics.
You analyze, you think of real examples and bring up questions; you stimulate yourself, you get hungry of knowledge. See it yourself, if you want to learn something try it and don't base yourself on a text. You read about driving a car and eventually you actually know how a car is driven, but... can you drive it yourself? Try, try, try. Don't be afraid to make "silly" questions if that helps you out. Touch with your own hands, see with your own eyes.
Personally, I've been told I have one of the weirdest mind. I'm proud of that because I can think of things that other people can't even elaborate.
Conclusions
The purpose of this thread is to help you understand the importance of the mental part of the business, it’s not the business that runs you but the opposite. The business will reflect your attitude.
A successful business has a successful mind behind. Don’t understimate the most advanced thing in the universe: your brain.
Notes
English users: sorry if got you cancer with this, I'm sure there are errors and I appreciate if you point em out to me so I can correct em.
- I will update and improve this thread as new things comes to my mind.
