Animegraphy - A year of anime in review

2014 was a very interesting year. We saw the return of our favorite shows such as Fate/Stay Night: UBW and Sailor Moon in the form of a remake, and the release of sequels to popular series like Sword Art Online II, Psycho-Pass 2, Date a Live II, Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle, and Love Live! School Idol Project 2nd Season (just to name a few). Earlier this week, Edward Yu, known better by his online alias Qyll, released this year's Animegraphy. The video is a compilation featuring highlights of the best scenes of the 214 shows that aired over the course of this year, complemented by precise synchronization to an appropriate soundtrack. The result is a well thought out and brilliantly executed AMV. Too bad he didn't make it longer! Check out the video below.

Holiday lights in the big city

With the holidays quickly coming around the corner, people all over the globe are putting their lights up in preparation for the holidays this season. Japan is no exception. From high end shopping centers in Roppongi and Ginza to local restaurants and conveniences stores in Ikebukuro and Akabane, Christmas, holiday, or simply illumination (as commonly said by the Japanese), lights decorate Tokyo, reminding its visitors and inhabitants that the holidays are fast approaching. However, these lights are far from the average Christmas decorations. Choreographed and synchronized with sound, these displays are scattered all over the Tokyo metropolitan area. It's no doubt that Japan loves decorating its already beautiful city for the holidays. You can view an example of one of these decorations by clicking here.

Aerial Burton 3D display projects images into mid-air

A company based in Kawasaki and Tokyo called Aerial Burton announced its release of a product it calls the "Aerial Burton 3D True HD Display", a screenless display that is now able to project text and images--all without a screen. The company believes that this new technology can be leveraged by emergency personnel to aid communication after a disaster, letting people know where to evacuate, or obtain food and emergency supplies. A video of it in action can be found here.

It is possible that this technology can also lead the way to holographic projections of textbooks/information in classrooms and work offices in the near future.

In this week's Cosplay Corner, we have the beautiful Totoki, playing the blood-slinging Mirai Kuriyama from Kyoukai no Kanata ("Beyond the Boundary"). First, I want to say that if you haven't seen Beyond the Boundary, you should definitely go see it - it's a must watch. That said, we've got two versions of Mirai Kuriyama here, a sexy version and your normal, what I like to call 'Warrior' mode!

I was looking through the rest of Totoki's cosplays and I found that she has quite the taste in cosplay and anime! I'm actually pretty fortunate I found her. I was looking for a good Mirai cosplayer for a while, and I just logged onto World Cosplay and there Totoki was in her Beyond the Boundary excellence. Now, one thing that I do want to say I enjoyed a lot about her cosplays are the environments she choose to take her photos in.

All of her environments seem to be carefully picked in order to portray her character's surroundings accurately. I find most her cosplays are pretty believable despite the fact this is indeed a cosplay and the fictional places portrayed are just that, fictional. That pretty much sums up this week's Cosplay Corner! Once again, brought to you by Fireworks! Hope to see ya next week!

Okazaki Tomoya is a delinquent who finds life dull and believes he'll never amount to anything. Along with his friend Sunohara, he skips school and plans to waste his high school days away.

One day while walking to school, Tomoya passes a young girl muttering quietly to herself. Without warning she exclaims "Anpan!" (a popular Japanese food in the form of a pastry with red bean filling) which catches Tomoya's attention. He soon discovers the girl's name is Furukawa Nagisa and that she exclaims things she likes in order to motivate herself. Nagisa claims they are now friends, but Tomoya walks away passing the encounter off as nothing.

Characters

Tomoya Okazaki
Tomoya Okazaki is the male protagonist of Clannad. Due to his habit of always arriving late to school, skipping classes during the day, and staying out all night, he has been labeled as a delinquent, a young person who defies authority.

Nagisa Furukawa
Nagisa is the main heroine of Clannad, and the daughter of Akio and Sanae Furukawa. Though she is in her senior year, Nagisa is one year older than her classmates; she had to repeat her third year again after an illness that lasted nine months. Nagisa meets Tomoya on the first day of this year.

Tails' Opinion
Like always we start with the story of Clannad. The story is good but not unique. It may be played out but for a good reason, the plotline is just good. And then they added on some alternate dimension with a hidden meaning you have to find for yourself. Its really great. Then, on top of that you get to just cry and cry over all the things that happen in general. It's hard to find an anime as popular as Clannad that most people like and agree will let you get to know your feels real nice. But unfortunately like I said, the storyline is cliche and a bit worn out so it loses a little for that.
I give the story a 7/10

The characters are something that I didn't really enjoy. Aside from one or two characters I kinda disliked the whole cast. So aside from that the characters aren't really great. Again, they're as cliche as it gets. Its not all bad as you continue to watch you get a real connection to the characters and their actions and feelings but with Clannad that's all it is. It feels as though they have no real substance.
I give the characters a 5/10.

Art is pretty short and sweet, for a 2008 anime, this show is beautiful. There really isn't a low point in the art anywhere to be honest. I just thought it was great.
I give the art an 9/10.

So it comes to enjoyment, well this can be answered in two questions. Should I watch Clannad? Yes
Is Clannad, despite its faults, enjoyable? Yes
Clannad is a roller coaster ride that will take you to emotional highs and make you happy, realistically and just about the show while preparing you for the lows that are depths of the ocean low and just plain terrible feeling for the characters and what not. So back the beginning. Should you watch Clannad? YES.
In terms of enjoyment I give it a 9/10

Programmargorp's Opinion

Derp, I realised that I’m currently in an IP Blocked country, so I can’t access HF to see your comments on my new format. Oh well, I’ll assume that you guys like it , but still shuffle it around a bit. Anyway, on to the review!
This week we have a series that’s so notoriously known for making people “cry oceans” and commonly used as a recommendation for beginners so often that I start to lose faith in the Western anime community. That said, Clannad was made by Kyoto Animation, who usually does quite well in the animation department. The original story of Clannad was done by Key, who has also written Air, Kanon, Angel Beats, Planetarian and Rewrite, which overall means that you should expect to see a pretty bland, but otherwise decent story. [For the sake of continuity, this review will be both on Clannad as well as Clannad After Story.]

Talking about first impressions of the series I had, after the community hyped up this one single series up so much, I walked into this expecting much, much more than what I got. You see, Clannad was doomed to be mediocre the second Key wrote it, despite that, I will give Key the benefit of the doubt and analyse it as I did with Elfen Lied.

Clannad is a story about friendship, depression, separation of friends and finally the importance of family, following Tomoya and his attempts at unknowingly gaining a Harem, KyoAni has chosen to use the route structure for the majority of the series. I say this because nothing much really happens in the first 30 or so episodes. We have Tomoya trolling while he helps people and completes their routes, which, in the end, results in nothing special about the series at all. In fact, this doesn't change until about halfway through After Story, which is where all the grunt of the series is at.

“But Gorp, how can you be so heartless and not cri oceans near the end of After Story?”

Simple answer, because anime is a horrible medium to fully communicate emotion. The ability for Clannad to induce tears in a meaningful manner was destroyed the second that they chose to make an anime adaptation of the series. Now, I haven’t read the VN, nor do I plan to as I have read one route, and the anime remained pretty faithful to the source material.
You see, the only thing that Clannad really had in itself was very nice animation (which was expected due to KyoAni). The characters? Mostly one dimensional and fits into a specific trope. The story? Mostly clichéd and not much different from a typical drama. In the end, there really isn't that much about Clannad as a whole that sets it apart from any other decently done Drama/Romance/SoL series.

So here we are, down to the most important part of this review, should you watch Clannad?
To be perfectly honest, seeing as I watched Clannad pretty early on in my three years of anime watching, it was really good at the time. However, since then I’ve watched quite a few other series and I've realised that it’s really “just another Drama/Romance/SoL”, but with better animation.
So at the end of this review, I answer the all important question: should you watch Clannad?

Yes. You see, even with the myriad of problems which it seems to exhibit, it’s still one of those series that’s become so niche in the anime community that you have to watch it, as to not miss this important bit of history.

Tails' Rating 8/10
Programmargorp's Rating 6/10

Title - Tokyo Ghoul
Title in Japanese- 東京喰種-トーキョーグール-
Genre(s)- Action, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Supernatural, Psychological, Seinen
Chapters currently released - 144
Author – Ishida, Sui
Artist(s) – Ishida, Sui
Released - Sep 8, 2011 to Sep 18, 2014
Status - Complete

Synopsis
Strange murders are happening in Tokyo. Due to liquid evidence at the scene, the police conclude the attacks are the results of "eater"-type ghouls. College buddies Kaneki and Hide come up with the idea that ghouls are imitating humans, which is why they haven't ever seen one. Little did they know that their theory may very well become reality.

Characters

Even when he was an introvert, He still looked cool. Right?

Ken Kaneki (金木 研)
The main character of the story. He was originally a human and a normal college student until he encountered a female ghoul named Rize who was posing as a human at the time. Rize, using Kaneki's crush on her as leverage, managed to lure him into an alley and tried to eat him but ended up dying when construction beams fell on top of her. Kaneki, already in a half-dead state from Rize's attempts at killing him, ends up in a hospital and has some of Rize's organs transplanted into his body. This results in him absorbing some of Rize's powers and characteristics, such as a ghoul eye, powers of regeneration, and the inability to stomach human food.

Terrified and lost, Kaneki's life takes a dramatic turn from then on as he tries to find a place for himself in the world, realizing he now belongs to neither the human nor ghoul world and refusing to eat humans to sustain himself. Meeting some of other ghouls, as well as humans, makes him realize that things aren't just black and white and that there are more to ghouls and humans than he originally thought.

For some reason, I don't think she's too happy here...

Touka Kirishima (霧嶋 董香)
Touka is a ghoul successfully posing as a human and working as a waitress at a cafe which serves as a gathering place for other ghouls, as well as a food resource.

She saves Kaneki's life at one point and acts as a reluctant guide to him and his adaptation to the ghoul society. She doesn't like Kaneki much and has no qualms about expressing her dislike for him. She is very serious, tough and hard-working, trying to keep their district as safe for ghouls and humans as possible. Her powers and strength are also quite great and she makes for a formidable opponent.

Vandie’s Opinion
I must say that I have been meaning to pick this up for a while now, so I was overjoyed when I finally got to it. I've been holding myself off the anime for a while as well, so it's nice to get to read the manga first.

First off, the story is quite possibly one of the strangest alternate Tokyo's I have read about to date. The Story follows Kaneki as he tries to come to grips with being both a ghoul and a human without really being either. It poses many questions on both humility and morality which is very nice to read indeed. Many of the things mentioned in Tokyo Ghoul made me question how I would react in the same circumstances, which resulted in a greater immersion in the story overall. The dark story had its lighter points which only made it dropping you off cliffs over dark abyss' all the more suspenseful. It is certainly not a manga for those who like a comedic love story though, so be warned. Ishida did an amazing job with Tokyo Ghoul's story and I commend him for it.
The story gets a great 10/10

The characters within Tokyo Ghoul were far from boring. It has many strong characters that really engage you as the reader, not least of which are the two mains. Kaneki, although, a bit of an introvert at the beginning, quickly changes when he realises that, as a ghoul, he is going to die if he doesn't get help from the others. The fact that Touka seems to just beat on him endlessly for no apparent reason doesn't seem to help, however. Overall Touka is probably my favorite character due to her overwhelmingly stubborn attitude towards fighting, pretty much punch first, ask questions later. She is, however, really intelligent and kind, getting Kaneki out of more than a few difficult situations...
Even the side characters are good and for that reason...
Tokyo Ghoul's characters receive a 9/10

Next is the Art. I'm not a massive fan of Tokyo Ghoul's artwork, but that's not because it's bad. I think all action-based manga have the problem of not being able to accurately portray the speed of the action that takes place. The artwork in itself is bloody good with entire sub-sections of Tokyo being drawn in stupendous detail. When not within a fight sequence, Tokyo Ghoul looks stunning with well over the required amount of detail being effortlessly smoothed into the backdrop of even the most pointless of tiles...Although I don't really like the action of the manga, I cannot penalise the art over something it cannot fix and so
I will be giving the art an impressive 8.5/10

Overall the manga was brilliant. I loved every second of reading it and am actually continuing to read it even as I type this sentence! The writing was intelligent, the characters interactions were done in great detail and the art was stunning outside of fast paced sections. Although Tokyo Ghoul had its flaws, I feel that it was well deserving of all the praise I have afforded it. I hope you will agree with me when I say that Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida was one of the greatest manga of this year.
Therefore, I have given Tokyo Ghoul a shiny 9.5/10

Although it wasn't quite 10/10, I am pleased to present Tokyo Ghoul with Vandie's Prestigious Seal Of Approval.

Thanks for reading my section again guys, I know that a lot of you enjoy reading AA weekly so I request that if you can, do send a PM to me or send me a message on tomodachi (@vandie) requesting a manga as I feel kind of stuck when it comes to picking one out at the beginning of each week.

Again. Thanks for reading.

Vandie

Saya no Uta (The Song of Saya)
Synopsis:
Fuminori Sakisaka has a traffic accident which kills his parents and leaves him heavily injured. When he has a brain surgery to save his life, his perception of the world changes: everything he sees becomes blood and guts, people's looks and voices seem like monsters, and food that normally appeals to him tastes disgusting.
As he contemplates suicide in the hospital, Fuminori meets a beautiful girl among the flesh-covered walls. She introduces herself as Saya, and is apparently looking for her father. Fuminori does not want to be separated from Saya, and asks her to live with him. She agrees.

Story review:
From the beginning of the game you can see the world is this twisted-looking hell, with his "friends" looking and sounding like monsters. The world is beyond disgusting. From the start, it’s hard not to sympathize with him. The interesting thing about this as even as Fuminori and Saya's actions slowly become more and more dark and twisted, you still feel a weird type of sympathy for them. It makes you root for the villains, even though you know what they are doing is wrong. While the game does have graphic backgrounds showing you what Fuminori sees constantly, it leaves a lot to your imagination. It's not just his sense of sight that is distorted though, all his other senses are the same, with almost all food tasting terrible and everyone sounding like terrible monsters.

This game isn't for the faint of heart or someone looking for a sweet romantic comedy. The Song of Saya is a game with murder, cannibalism, rape, and scores of gut churning sights. This is not a happy story that everyone can enjoy.

The hardcore sex scenes (which can be censored if you so choose) are particularly unsettling. While the scenes aren't that far and above the normal, the story’s implications as to who Saya is makes the sex anything but erotic despite its normal seeming presentation.

There is only two choices in this game, however each choice will significantly change the outcome of the story. Whats interesting is the first choice is made from the perspective of the main character, however the 2nd choice is made by his rival. It makes it feel like you have more control over the story.

This is a short VN, taking me about 5-7 hours to finish all the routes. Now I'm not sure how I really feel about this VN. Part of me wants to say it was a great VN and I enjoyed playing it, but it was also pretty disturbing all around. The relationship between Fuminori and Saya remains prevalent throughout the entire story and is what drives all of their actions.

Sound:
The game’s soundtrack—when following his point of view—is largely a cacophony of discordant music and random sounds (unless Saya is present). On top of that, the voices of his friends are nearly screeches that, while somewhat understandable, are almost painful to listen to.

Art
The art is portrayed well really adding to the mood of the game, my only complaint is some scenes are reused quite a few times.

Overall Satisfaction:
After playing this, I think that if you can get through it, it would be a great one to play. It makes you second guess your true feelings for these characters.
Story: 9/10
Sound: 8/10
Art: 8/10

Our new writer, Fireworks will be taking over the Cosplay Corner. He has started last week, writing for issue #66! Now that my hands are free, I can concentrate on working behind-the-scenes to allow AA Weekly to expand. Hopefully we can add even more new content to satisfy our readers. Please don't let our efforts go to waste!

Graphics Update

That cosplay corner left me breathless. o-o I've also been looking for a good Mirai cosplay for some time.

Seeing those lights in Tokyo makes me so jealous. I wish we had that kind of stuff where I live.

Great recommendations for Manga and Anime this week.

I never knew Fireworks was a dj. That's pretty cool.

Technology seems to be progressively getting faster and faster. I love reading about the new stuff in development.
(Who's excited for Oculus when it's released for consumers?)

Overall, great weekly guys. :3

Music suggestion were great form everyone (this time ✌)

Clannad review i feel that programs is lumping clannad along side the same type of anime like the big 3 and finding things to critique it on as if its bad, since its a thing in the anime community in general to hate on anything that starts getting a huge fan base around it (Attack on Titan) and somehow people think they have better taste in certain things just cause they are in the minority well meh he could honestly not like it and im probably just saying this cause i disagree on some points of his lol w.e good review tho 😁

There are a bunch of places that decorate for the holidays where I live but none look that amazing nor are they synched with music. That would be an awesome place to just walk around and admire the beautiful scenery.

Japan always has to do it big when it comes to technology. No lie, it's pretty freakin' awesome that they have this but I'm surprised how simple the solution is. I figured it would be a much more complex setup. The utilization of the 3D scanner is pretty ingenious though.

That first song has a real indie feel to it which I like. The singer has a really nice voice which is relaxing and it's pretty easy to lose yourself in the melody.

I found a little hiccup in the Music section. The second song was used last issue and the third song was used in issue #62.

Totoki really likes Mirai huh? Just by the sheer number of cosplays of the same characters it's clear who her favorite characters are. She does a pretty good Shoyo despite being a chick. Actually, all her male cosplays are pretty good. What I find interesting is how she over-sexualizes certain characters who aren't really depicted that way in their respective shows. Definitely gets your imagination going.

Saya no Uta sounds like my cup of tea. I like that weird, twisted stuff lol. It would be nice to showcase more horror/psychological VN's.

Quick question about the Knee High Socks Appreciation Club. I'm more of a stockings (typically with a garter belt) kind of guy and I was wondering if my kind are welcome? Stockings are usually mid-thigh to upper thigh in length and in your group description you state

"We can engage in many different topics ranging from the favorite colors, designs, lengths etc that we prefer".

There are pictures posted of girls with socks that are well above the knees in that thread despite the "Knee High" in the club name. If we are not welcome, that's cool; it still looks like a great club.

Nice job AA Weekly team. Congrats to the new members and I can't wait to read the new sections next issue!

I disagree with this
"Simple answer, because anime is a horrible medium to fully communicate emotion."
- Programmargorp's clannad afterstory review

While I agree that it might be less powerful than the emotions of real characters/actors, I still think anime can pull it off. I haven't watched clannad AS yet myself, nor do I usually get much emotional (neither with anime or real shows) (I mean to the point where I'd cry and stuff) but I do feel that emotional impact some times and anime can do that to me just as good as real shows can.
