Sad news indeed. Good luck with fixing this and finding precautions for future attacks and things like this.

Omnicoin Problem |
|
I think we're within 48 hours of having this fully resolved. Maybe sooner if we're lucky. 51% attacks are almost unpreventable. Sort of like DDOS attacks. It's a matter of out-hardwareing the attacker. There are measures that can be taken to minimize the risk and the damage which I'm sure the dev team will consider. Example might be raising the confirmation requirements. Another might be purchasing more nodes and running more mining equipment. Could be possible too that better monitoring can be placed to alert us and the community of problems as quickly as possible.
Not too concerned over the long-term effect of this situation. All alt-coins deal with similar problems with hacks, attacks, and manipulation. I have faith in the strength of our community to overcome this. (Feb 11, 2015 03:23 PM)Omniscient Wrote: I think we're within 48 hours of having this fully resolved. Glad to hear it. The Omnicoin devs are some seriously talented people and the Omnicoin is still relatively young, so mishaps like this won't do much in the long-term. It's a shame so many people lost their AllCrypt OMC but imo, that's an inherent risk with online wallets - you can't trust them and you'll get screwed eventually. Even if the OMC aren't recovered, I'm interested to see what the devs come up as a resolution to this problem. Whoever did it will have to sit on their coins for quite some time, as members will be following the blockchain of those addresses with a close eye. Hopefully we can even get a detailed story in the HF News! Anyways, it appears to be a momentary setback, one that should be able to be worked out given enough time and effort. At least it wasn't a critical blow to OMC and HF. ![]() (Feb 11, 2015 03:23 PM)Omniscient Wrote: I think we're within 48 hours of having this fully resolved. Great to hear! Massive props to the OMC Dev team and yourself on how swiftly and professionally you's have tackled the issue and are working on getting everything back to normal. It's still only early days for OMC and imo only a minor setback for the coin. (Feb 11, 2015 03:23 PM)Omniscient Wrote: I think we're within 48 hours of having this fully resolved. Unfortunately those of us affected by this have to realize that it's something we should have taken into account long before putting the coins on an exchange. The hash rate was just not high enough to be immune to a 51% attack. Myself and many others were concerned in the beginning of OMC but for some reason we got comfortable and forgot to remain vigilant in keeping our (or at least my) coins safe. This'll serve as a reminder to not forget and ignore risks like that just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't.
I traded over 150k OMC through AllCrypt over the time when the value of the coin was more or less stable. Truly saddened to hear about this happening.
