OMC

Stop burst mining

Burst mining (mining with a large amount of hashrate for a short period of time) is a bad habit as it negatively effects both you (the miner) and the network (all the other miners).

The difficulty is an exponentially increasing number. It isn't linear. This means that the higher it is, the less profitable it is to mine (you probably already know this). But think that through a little bit more. The difficulty ensures that the network solves one block at an average rate of every 3 minutes. If the total hashrate where 1MH/s, the difficulty would be extremely low, yet the same amount of OMC would be mined. Now if the hashrate were 1GH/s, the difficulty would be very high and the same number of coins would be mined. So why would you pay for 1GH/s, when you could mine at 1MH/s and get the same number of coins? It's essentially a waste of money.

Buy bursting, you are just paying more money to get less coins. You will actually make more money from mining by mining at a low, consistent hashrate. By bursting you will just be reducing the amount of money you make and upsetting the network.

If you want a little more technical reasoning, Doctor Blue summed it up nicely in his post: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?ti...723&page=2

(the amount of OMC mined is on the left, and the hashrate is on the bottom).

It should be quite clear that the more hashrate you add, the less efficient it is, thus the less OMC you will earn.

Also, pools have what is called PPLNS shares. Without getting into details, this basically means that steady miners get more OMC, and those bursting get less.

And if you think that by bursting you will bypass the difficulty and get more OMC, you are wrong. The difficulty is calculated every block. You can't bypass it. And with the upcoming switch to DGW, the difficulty will increase much more accurately, making it even less profitable to burst.

And last of all, if you care about the network / coin, these are the bad effects burst mining has on them:
  1. You are increasing the difficulty, making mining less (or un)profitable for the regular miners of the network. This causes them to no longer mine the coin and drives them to other coins.
  2. Since the difficulty and network speed are constantly changing, confirmations either take a few seconds, or they take hours (or longer). This drives users away from the coin.

So please, stop burst mining. It isn't profitable to you or the network. It hurts both of them.
Thank you for summarizing this and explaining it so well Abe. I totally agree.
Everyone should read this post. In fact, I'll just might sticky this.

Plz turn yours down so I can mine 😟
I am currently doing 2,000 omc/day for one day. Is that burst mining?

My hashrate is set to 500MH/s. If it goes over, it's either NiceHash messing up or the pool inaccurately estimating the hashrate.

I'm not bursting, I'm keeping a steady hashrate (at least trying to. Nicehash isn't always the best)

I've seen nicehash do 2GH/s on my 500mh/s orders before. It usually corrects itself in a few minutes.

Hell of a long mess up, it was between 800Mh/s and 1Gh/s for about half an hour. Had it happen to myself before but never for that long. Difficulty rose from 25-47. 😟
Most people don't care about the others and just want the most out of their hashrate, sadly.

That's probably the pool inaccurately estimating the hashrate. Whenever there are large changes it usually doesn't do a great job on the estimate.

On my dashboard it showed 450MH/s (the actual speed), and on the stats page it showed 1GH/s.
I have the same problem when using Nicehash... It's the better place I found for hashing power but their "limit hashrate" feature is not accurate (when I set to 100Mh/s they're is some spike up to 1 Gh/s)

Someone is bursting again. The payments are going to oMoTyLhWLNCDqLRY39DYkZH3vgeyCDX5AT and oPr128pUUxBa62WqzYNFEMWsDzHBbXyyiS

The OMC is then being sent to their Bittrex account oJA9UNLxmjGfUDJ22YhhdaJfPoqmKUwMr1 and presumably being sold.

I'd guess they are mining at around 1GH/s with a bot that automatically mines when the difficulty is low.

If you are doing this, please stop. Confirmations are taking two hours. It's just hurting the coin and actually results in less profit for you. Read the OP.
I've seen that since we are on Bittrex... Maybe a trader saw the opportunity to make a quick.

Some mining pool is targeting profitable coin. They will switch to different coin as long as they find it more profitable.
I know it's not profitable but when you trying to mine at 2Mh with low difficulty you always have another person will come with 150-200Mhs and your 2Mh is completly useless, so you need to burst too
Personally i don't like burst

It's actually more profitable to mine at a constant 2MH/s than to burst at 200MH/s, no matter what others are doing.
