Hello HF Members,
as some already know, I have improved the Local Network/Homegroup Batch Chatroom made by gogglebot (Thread can be found here: hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=4417341)
You may ask, "What did you improve?" Here you go:
- only one window needed ✓ (Type "+" in the chat to refresh)
- /afk ✓
- /me ✓
- /join ✓
- Easy to setup new Chatrooms ✓
- /online ✓
- /nick ✓
- /msg ✗(Does not work yet. Anyways, if you want to look at my current code: pastebin.com/7ykNWWQY)
I have made a setup that will do most of the work.
Run it once and all the folders will be created and shared.
Read the "ReadMe.txt" that will be generated at C:\Chatroom for the last few things you have to do.
Setup: pastebin.com/raw.php?i=cauSVxbz
Chatroom: pastebin.com/raw.php?i=8ANSH2ir
To make new channels, just create a .dat file in the "Channel" folder.
The pastebin posts will be deleted in one month. If you still want to have a copy, send me an E-Mail ( [email protected])
If you have any requests of features let me know :)
Have fun!
Bye, Crez! 🙂

For case insensitive IF statements, do the /I switch. Also how does all of this local networking stuff work? Is there resources I could use? Since I think I might create my own, seems really cool, and I have so much ideas in mind. Good script overall.

I haven't had a chance to review this code, but in almost every case it's a file that is accessible by all computers on the network, either through a shared folder or NAS.

This doesn't help me at all, have you got any resources (such as tutorials/websites) I can use to make one? Not copy and pasting but from scratch.

You're dealing with basic file operations, reading and writing. The only thing different is that multiple people can do this on the same file.
This is fantastic! I like the implementation of the new commands. That makes it very user interactive. I went into the code and changed the colors to match my high school's colors on our local drive (green, black, and white).
Anyway, I love the new update! 🤗

It works with sharing the folder so everyone in the same network can access it. Use "net share SomeName=C:\Some\Path" to share a folder in your network.
Use the same command again with a "/delete" after it to delete the share.
If you still have any questions, feel free to ask me :)

I havethought about making something like this that uses ftp so its online instead of just local.

Its just editing a file in a shared folder, what resources do you expect?

Its just editing a file in a shared folder, what resources do you expect? A video or website, how do I do it exactly? What file do I make?

There's no "special technique" to do this. Crez already outlined how to share folders, and as I said before, it's just simple reading and writing to a file within a shared location. You already know how to do this, so me explaining it again to you is just adding insult to injury.
Code echo This replaces anything in the file with the text > N:\yoursharedfolder\chat.txt
echo This adds more text to the end of the file >> N:\yoursharedfolder\chat.txt
rem this displays the contents of the file in the console
type N:\yoursharedfolder\chat.txt
Doesn't get much more straightforward than that.

How do I enable file sharing and what drive is it? Is it defaultly N:?

rightclick > properties > sharing tab > advanced sharing > check share this folder > type a name add permissions > apply
Security > edit > add > everyone (or whatever user you want) > OK > Apply
If you want someone to use admin shares on work group it takes a little work. All computers must have your account name and password. You also need to do a registry hack seen below.
(for the uninitiated: admin share is \\computername\c$)
1) Open registry.
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-Software-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-Policies-System
3) Add a new value DWORD ( 32 Bit or 64 Bit, depends on OS version), name it LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy and give value 1. Restart.
There's no place like ~/

This is where Crez so kindly showed how to enable folder sharing on the network. Nobody is being mean to you, though in my case that is purely through sheer force of will at this point. The drive isn't always going to be the same letter, that's up to you when you implement it. I just chose N:\ because if you always pick C:\, people often start to worry when they encounter a letter that's not C (you wouldn't believe how funny it was trying to explain to people that I had no C:\ drive on an old Win7 install, but E:\ instead). Besides, you can't pick a drive letter that's already in use, so always avoid the first 10 and last 5 letters of the alphabet.
When you share a folder, it's generally accessed remotely by \\YOURSERVERCOMPUTER-NAME\foldername, but if you had done any sort of research beyond whining here that our help is actually being mean and demanding videos and code that you can not-copy, you would have found that NET USE allows you to shorten that down to a simple drive letter, like N:\ for example.
Code net use N:\ "\\YOURSERVERCOMPUTER-NAME\foldername"
I strongly suggest you read this, this (if you continue to ignore Crez's help), or just google something along the lines of "access remote share CMD". Past this point, it's as I said before - basic read/write, which you should know how to do.

Ali... this makes me chuckle. You ask how this chatroom works:
(May 1, 2015 05:49 AM)'Palladium Wrote: how does all of this local networking stuff work?
WhiteLight specifically identifies the system being used to make it work:
(May 1, 2015 07:44 AM)White Light Wrote: it's a file that is accessible by all computers on the network, either through a shared folder or NAS.
And you respond with:

lol! Are you serious? He just told you the answer to your question, and you're like "this doesn't help me at all". Do you expect everyone to write an entire illustrated tutorial for you to skim through every time you ask a question? Did you think about googling "Shared folder" or "NAS" to see what they are?
Get some humility... and show some gratitude and effort when others help you.. You clearly dislike WhiteLight even though he helps you constantly. I've no idea why. Perhaps because he doesn't sugar-coat his words..
To top it off:

You actually have the gall to feel sorry for yourself.
Really cool. Thank you for recreating this 🎉
