A couple months ago I rented a new server for us and I've slowly been working on it as the time has presented itself.
Given how much BS we're dealing with lately I'm trying to push up the timetable to accomplish a full server move.
Our existing servers are old. They are underpowered and don't have enough resources. Certain options which I'd love to add to HF I have not been able to do.
The new servers are amazing. The DB server alone has 96GB of ram and 24 cores. More than enough power and room to implement new features and to run HF for at least 5 more years.
The HTTP server is right now running both Nginx and Apache with Nginx as the reverse-proxy. I just got done setting it up to my satisfaction. I have a lot of special needs and custom stuff I run. It's running like a charm right now.
Things that will improve after the move:
1. Load time. Already quick but should be even faster.
2. Search. I should be able to ditch Sphinx search in favor of the built in InnoDB FT searching. Biggest difference will be that I can likely set min characters to just 3 and that results will be more accurate. We should also have searching by Thread Prefix working too. That's going to open up some possibilities for plugins or custom changes.
3. Notifications. Yes, I might, just might consider options.
4. Uptime. The new setup should in theory provide us with a lot better uptime. The NGINX reverse-proxy provides me a new tool to stop certain attacks that have been hounding HF.
5. Security. The new servers have a few extra security measures I've placed. Can't really elaborate but the servers do have a deeper setup than existing ones.
I am sure there is more too. Many suggestions are rejected just based on resources.
I still need to continue working and doing more testing. I am almost certainly going to upgrade us to the latest branch of MyBB 1.8x. That itself is going drive me crazy with changes to plugins and templates.
Once we're on 1.8 I'm going to work on making our template a responsive design. Hopefully I won't have too much trouble and we can look forward to a truly good site experience for mobile and desktop users alike.
So that's an update to what's going on and how I spent the last 24 hours. It's going to be a big summer around here. Changes are coming and all of them are improvements.
Thank you for reading.
