Netpad | Full Notepad Replica in .NET | TextBox Control Flexibility

Today I bring you a fully featured notepad clone. Not very exciting, but the aim here is to show you just how flexible the TextBox control can be since I've seen a lot of people recommending the RichTextBox for functionality already existing in the standard TextBox. Most of us, myself included, don't dig much deeper than the multiline and text properties when it offers so much more.

Feature list:
  • Create, open, save [as]

  • Undo, cut, copy, paste, select all

  • Word wrap, font changing via dialog, tab recognition

  • Find and replace single or multiple instanced search term in asc/descending order with optional case sensitivity

  • Line & column counting (through status strip)

  • Configure and print document

  • Insert chrono-data

Some of these are readily achievable through existing methods (cut, copy, etc.) but others such as the find & replace work makes use of Regex which is done by checking if this is the first time searching with this term (in other words, we're not in the middle of a search already) and if we are, generate a new Regex pattern. I should also note it's easy to accommodate pattern searching; but the real Notepad doesn't support this... so neither will this.

From there we conduct the search and point the selection to the first match through the SelectionStart/Length properties. If it there is no match to present, we inform the user and conclude the search. Changing the other controls for example reversing the search pattern will reset the search.

Anyway, enough blabbing. This can all be viewed in the source.

Known issues:
-FontDialog doesn't accept decimal as size input. I can't find a workaround for this, even when digging around the CommonDialog lib.

This is actually really cool, will DL on my PC when I get on.
Wow, I love it, I'll try it out tonight. (I'll give credits <3)

Thanks :)
a really cool addition would be Regex patterns when using Find and Replace like notepad++, cool release nonetheless.

I did this for one of my first projects, nice and easy one to finish. Looks like you did a good job on this.

Now you should try expanding on it, add a few features etc :)

I'm glad people are liking it! Actually, I had implemented pattern searching since I was already using the Regex engine, but ended up removing it since the real Notepad didn't support this. I think I mentioned that in the thread.

Great work, interested to see what else you release.

Though the project was created some weeks ago, I hadn't worked on functionality until 3ish days ago. Pleased to see you like it, I hope to release a theme soon.

Are you implying I'm a noob?! No but this was actually one of my first ones a long time ago, though not quite as complete.

what about some space to keep it more organize and readable
also u should use functions instead of forms when its not needed

I have the CodeLens reference counters, so they act as my spacers between methods.

Hang on a minute... I had a feeling that source wasn't right. Uploaded the wrong damn version haha, re-download from the OP.

What do you mean about using functions instead of forms? Keep in mind this is a replica.
Interesting share. Thanks mate.

NO i said exactly what i meant this is a easy project to finish, which as it happens was one of the first main projects (after learning for a while).

Everyone is a noob at something. But no as i said you did a good job. Although i was expecting members of debug to be coding something more useful then what already comes with my operating system...

Good i can't wait to see what you guys are up to wish i had the time to give to fully support/help a group but i do not :(

I do appreciate you giving up your source for others to learn from, hopefully some of the newer member will have a good look at this source and learn a great deal from it Kudos :)

EDIT: This is a great share for the community at least you gave your time to help others, that's great in my book :)

On a side note will debug be release there sources or will they be more for making the group money etc?

Debug, from what I know, isn't a money based group. More of a service to the community. :)

Wow man, really nice! Very well done!

Cool, Then hopefully we should see some great projects coming from them :)

A little excited to see what the PHP, Javascript, vb.net and c# coders (plus the other languages) will produce together tbh could be quite interesting :)

I'm in talks with Microsoft over supplying it with every copy of Windows 10. My legal team has informed me I can expect several dollars; most likely $7.
