[FREE] [EBOOK] The Hacker Ethos - Beginner's Primer to Ethical Hacking

I'm just curious, but are you only showing "hacking" of web-sites or are you also explaining things, when getting physical access to a machine? I didn't read all the chapters yet, but I think, a chapter showing how to "hack" the client-applications on your own machine, would also be a nice gimmick to your book. Maybe in later releases? :)
Hm. Just wondering but wouldn't the more appropriate section to put this here: Hacking Tutorials

That is where I originally posted it. It was removed by an admin without any reason... so I reposted it here since it is meant for beginners in the first place. If the admins want this thread in the ebook section, that's cool with me, but honestly, I feel it belongs here with the noobs who need to read it. In my humble opinion, there should be a NOOB TUT subforum in this tab...

This book contains techniques, tool instructions, and methods of attack that can be used for remote exploitation and penetration testing.

And what do you mean, I only showing hacking of Web sites? I never showed how to crack a website. I have mentioned some applicable techniques, but I did not give any walkthrough or instructions on web site havking...

As for application exploitation, I already did show that. I explained how to use NMAP and METASPLOIT to exploit a vulnerability in a popular IRC client. I even explain how to setup a Metasploitable server to give you plenty of client applications and protocols to experiment with. I can't show you every exploit method, it would take months and hundreds, even thousands of pages. But I can show you the basic techniques and the programs used. I would be spoon feeding if I did the former...

You should read the book before creating suggestions for additions or revisions...

I really appreciate your fantastic work!
I will definitely have a read ♥
Honest review/thoughts so far, I tried to be as constructive as I could.

You place Java as {EASY} as html and css? I'd suggest separating Java from Javascript. The way you made it look, they have similarities although in the text you said they are different. That can be confusing.
And as I remember (just checked, maybe I am blind) there is no Java on codeacademy, but javascript is.
Also suggesting to start with Java, Python, Ruby because they are easy? Can't speak for Ruby, but I used both Java and Python, and Java should NOT be labeled as easy.
Other way of thinking, polymorphism and MANY other things to be aware of.
I guess it was a typo and you meant Javascript.

I'd also give other suggestions instead of Kali Linux, you can use ANY linux distro and install those tools. Kali just have everything pre-installed, and I'm sure many people see it as bloated. Especially when I doubt new users (which the book is aimed for) will use all those tools that Kali offers.

I'd also suggest bringing up "man" command on unix, for manual pages. Can be great for beginners to man some commands to see what they do, see flags etc.
Especially the -h/--help flags.

You say: "Early fans of the Apple Macintosh computers may find some
familiarity with the look and feel of the operating system, but it is a totally different animal and requires quite some knowledge of Linux CLI (Bash script) in order to operate it effectively."
I started with OS X, using both OS X and Linux (arch) on other computer, and the difference is NOT as big or "different animal" as you describe it.
And I don't understand what you mean by "requires quite some knowledge of Linux CLI (Bash script)". You don't need to know bash to use Linux. (unless you want to configure your own stuff, which is not a part of the ebook)

Metasploit is a software not a book or an academic resource.
Quote:
"Definition
Academic sources are books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and published reports written by experts for an academic audience. Academic sources are also called scholarly sources."

Change it to Resources instead.

Another piece of advice, use some kind of references inside text and make references "chapter" with all of them. This will make your book look much more professional, it will back up your information, and people can use that source for further reading.

Thank you for the comprehensive and honest review. Indeed, my programming section is in dire need of an update, and you can trust that it is being worked on. Th3PonyWizard, now known a new name, has contributed a large sum of knowledge and resources on these topics which is going to be added to the book, along with an entire rewrite of the programming section.

Thank you for also mentioning the help and MAN commands. I did not think to add them, but you are definitely right.

I added Linux CLI and Bash scripting as a recommended step in the learning process because my goal is to give everyone a full understanding about all of the possible avenues they can take to learn how to gain experience as a hacker. Learning Linux bash helps to make your own tools, macro commands, hotkey functions, and also makes the command line of Linux distros far less scary and more familiar. A good example is using Linux bash to script up a hot key to automatically write out an entire...say...NMAP scan script so that all you have to do is write out the IP address/domain of your target. Just an example.

Trust me, lots of new users find it extremely indimidating and don't know where to start. Learning the Linux cli helps.

And finally, thank you for catching the typos. I meant to include metaspoit's homepage as an academic resource because of the tutorials on it, not list the software itself as the source.

Again, thank you for the comprehensive review. Your criticism is necessary to perfect the book for the readers.

To the readers:

This book is quickly approaching 100 pages and I may no longer be able to offer it as a free resource.

I will offer a condensed version of the book for free here in the thread as I always have, but after the first 100 pages is complete, I am going to move the on-going editions to a marketplace thread where it will be available for purchase. Don't worry, the book will be very affordable, just not free. It has become such a massive project that I cannot continue justifying my dedication to it without being compensated in some way.

I want to thank you all for continuing to read The Hacker's Ethos, and you will be glad to know that both the FREE version and the Paid version will become download able for everyone to keep their own digital copy. The tremendous support I have received has given me a lot of hope for the community, that our overwhelming SKID population will finally begin to shrink, and there will be some outstanding new contributions coming from you all.

Thanks for all your support.

My pleasure! I'm sorry that only 'some' of the book is useful. Of course, I don't expect it to be overly-educational for veteran hackers and penetration testers. After all, this book is tailored to the newbiest of the newbies. But just wait, there is a new revision that I will be releasing soon. I have been working on it tirelessly and it has grown by an additional 50 pages, doubling in size.

Unfortunately, this next revision will be the last "Free" one that I offer. After I break 100 pages, all copies that follow will become a paid e-book. The free version will always be available though. 🤝
