In what language is the source code
What ? you edit source code without knowing the basics of computation and compilation ? omg , please watch a tutorial before trying to code. ;) It will make you a better programmer.

We all start somewhere... and he probaly bbought a source that defines what he needs to change

Download Visual studios, open the .sln(?) file, edit, and then "Local windows debug" then open the folder location and file should be ".../bin/debug/something.exe"
That's not where you start though. You don't even learn a line of code before you know how to compile. lol
oh god buddy you need to learn how to compile first lol use google to find out how to compile something in the language you are using like gcc for c

And if it's not a VS project?
If he just has a cpp file?

Then teach him how to compile c++ code in his head. not difficult.
^ This. He can just write the object code himself in a hex editor.
I laughed at u lel

Just build the source.
What is the extention of the source file (file.c, file.cpp, file.sln, file.py, file.rb, file.*)

Does it matter what the fucking extension is? I could have C code in a .py file extension and my compiler would still compile the fucking code.
In the end, the compiler's looking at the raw binary.
G++:
Code
g++ main.cpp -o main

As for windows, I think it's the same but with mingw or whatever compiler/toolchain you're using.
