"Yo". That word is a great way to title a pm, if I've talked to you before and used that, shoutout to you.
Great, shoutouts are done.
Now let's discuss some some truths about the internet, skip this part if you want to. I degraded into ranting near the end of this, but to be fair I wasn't very happy when I wrote this, I had just realized a good friend of mine had died, and shortly after I asked for a 1 month vac ban. The premise of my anger though is how time doesn't stop, and that rules keep getting more restricting. People who became famous for what they posted were later banned for those exact same posts.
Anonymity isn't what it once used to be.
Times are fucking changing, and to the people who don't realize it, take a quick look back and try to remember what it was like when you had to use dialup to connect to the interwebz. If you can't remember this, or never dealt with this, that's okay, I'm not really intending to talk to you, you can go off and talk about whatever on a different part of the forum now. To the people who have been using this shit for over 10 years now, you have to admit that times have drastically changed. It's no longer filled with people who don't really give a fuck, you can't screw off as much as you used to, and the general amount of "screwing around" has been decreasing since 2600 way back when. You don't need a brain to access the internet like you used to. Don't have to figure out how the hell to protect xp from the second you try connecting to the internet. It's cleaned up, it's nice and fixed; there's just a lot less general mayhem.
Good friends have been both made and lost, and people you once thought you knew have drastically changed. I got hit by this the hardest when I did a checkup on a forum I joined back in 08. Turns out that they added new rules two years ago and enforced them retroactively. RIP account. Also, saw a thread from back in 11 of one of my good friends bitching out the admins since they were tightening things for no good reason other than "people who care might come, so we can't let them see this". It sucks. It really does. He was one of the more famous members too, and not only did they ban him but postwipe him for everything pre 11. Rules change here too, so to the kids who complain about rule changes here, I would say they aren't too bad compared to that other forum. Even 4chan's gotten softer, and the site has obtained groups of people it doesn't need. What a drag.
Bringing this back to the forum, if you ever have problems with members, never screw over the new ones. Seriously. The ones that have over 1k rep 10k posts whatever the fuck stats are the ones that are lowkey holding shit back. Don't randomly neg/neutral normals and when they pm you slightly pissed, don't just ignore them like an asshat. To be honest, I don't even know how much of that is an actual problem, but I hope that it's only confined to a minority. Each new user is person that can potentially help you, look at it in that light. I've seen a lot of people be dicks, and I know I've been a dick occasionally myself when I get mad when there is LQ thread after LQ thread in the crypto section, but whatever. Next goodwill monday (hopefully sooner) get that shit sorted out. Be a nice person, or at least try to be.
So, to all of the people who say that the "Groups are shit it used to be better", you're also a part of the problem. Don't make massive threads on that, but instead make a thread saying "Hey, how can we become a better group". This is simple conflict resolution 101. By the way, anyone notice how all (I think) of the leaders of Legion have now been closed?
Groups I have been in:
Void (2013->2014): Honestly, this group was amazing, and I miss it. Lots of cool discussions, and everyone who was a member back then two years ago would agree. There wasn't a lounge, but the random topics you could join in to talk about was fun. Just wish more of you were around today, way too many of you have closed accounts. Also, I joined this group with 100 posts and 1 reputation point, so to everyone saying "normals can't get into usergroups", they can. Maybe you just need to re evaulate how you hold yourself on this forum.
Empire (2014): Was in this group for two weeks, and it was pretty chill, from what I remember. Only really posted on the thread about alcoholic drinks.
Nexus (2014): Why was Void ever changed into this? I know that void was a slow group, but I never thought it merited change into this. Was in this group for two days and left.
L'appel du Vide (2014, 2015->2016): Nowhere near the same as void in terms of quality, or qualia. Take your pick but both are needed. I miss qualia's long winding posts that tended to go off on tangents that made no sense.
Specialists (2015): I have 50 or so posts in there but don't really feel that it means much. Talked to the leaders, talked to the members, and I left when I felt that people were being added just because they were friends of people in the group.
Debug (2015): Clusterfuck. That is all.
AnimeFan! (2015): They don't care that parts of the forum hates them, and have been on the forum the longest out of all the groups on HF. They do exactly what they say they do.
The Black Lodge (2016): It was mostly made of lounge threads. Sad to see the group finally come to an end after being sold, after which I left immediately.
Null (2015->2016): Very low sf activity, mostly talk to them on IRC/TS. Since I'm being honest with this entire feedback, I'll say this now: I don't think some of the students should be in the group. I think that some paid just to wear a userbar, which is disappointing. Last time I regularly wore a userbar was back in Void so people would take me seriously as I was not an upgraded member and had very few posts.
Elusive (2015->?): Best group out of all of the above listed for hacking and general computer stuff. We were going to try to become an official group but the only two people I would've trusted to run it either were closed or were denied.
Sections
Crypto: This is my homebase. I love cryptography, I love ciphers, I love puzzles, and I exceptionally love smashing my head into a wall repeatedly. The crypter threads have been and will always be cancer but the stickies bring in a massive amount of revenue so we're kind of screwed on that point. I still report a lot of threads in there and they get junked pretty fast, so thanks for that. Ever got a question about this pm either theDubWubCub, chick3nman, Forezza, Tony Spilotro, w34k, or me. I never shoot people down who ask me a question about legit crypto. But if you ask me on how to code your crypter, well, you're not going to have a good day.
AA: Chances is that you have shit taste. And I'm afraid that the only solution is to kys. Miss the lounges in the section, but fuck you guys started abusing them a little bit too much when we started to hit 2k posts in two weeks.
Beginner Hacking: Don't hate on the people who want to learn. But if someone says they want to ddos the hacker known as 4chan for being mean, say whatever you want. Also, giving bad advice is worse than giving no advice at all. To people who don't know how to break nice things but want to, cross check the information. To people who don't know how to break nice things but pretend to, go fuck yourselves. To the people who know how to break nice things but don't help, not surprised. And to the people who know how to break nice things and help as much as they sanely can, such as pony, you're amazing.
The Lounge: Is what it is.
Anonymity: I'll post my tutorial(s) when I feel like it, but sometimes you ask yourself what's the point. Section is filled with people asking how to dox. Occasionally you get a good thread going, but too many people are afraid of "speaking too much" when in reality anyone who really wanted to go after you could, so might as well say what you know. Why do you guys think I posted my thread anyways? If I really thought it was 100% perfect, I'd probably keep it to myself. Homeroots in the chans though convinced me otherwise.
SRPP: I love talking about multiverse theory; theory mixed in with logic and science is always fun Always thought that the concept of how universes would interact with each other is something interesting to posit. I don't agree with Omniscient's 25 prestige threshold, and I think it should be lowered to 15. I know I've said this multiple times, but I feel that it should be said again.
Java: Good job on Looka to become mod of the section, yes I am still slightly jealous (I always wanted to mod the crypto section, just like everyone wants to mod their favorite section) but he knows his stuff and he puts his time into the forum. Java's a great language, screw the haters. By the way, if you ever need help with JPanel, just hit me up. I've written over 3k lines of code using Jpanels and everything in the past couple of weeks for a massive multipage panel, switches from screen to screen, has a log in feature that loads jpanels according to your usertype, everything.
Electronic Hacking: DaRkReD is the most knowledgeable poster there, take what he says for close to fact.
The rest: Idk pop into one of the above sections whenever you feel like it.
Admins/Staff that I've seen post / dealt with
Omni - I agree with some things, disagree with others, but that's how it will always be between a user and an owner of a site. Thanks for the server upgrades though, and thanks for the crypto section. That meant a lot to me and a couple others who like crypto.
Factor8 - Don't know what to say here other than I think he put a note on my account that my ip is usually a uni one, so please don't merge me. Haven't been merged yet so that's a good sign.
Xch4ng3 - XO til we OD, you're chill af and I saw the couple of times you came down hard in the crypto section, thanks for that
RDCA - exstaff, but still deserves mention for all of the times I pmed him with a long list of threads that needed to be junked with reasons as to why. Helped me with my crypto suggestion thread too, so thanks for that.
JD - You are part of the reason why groups started going to shit. Users point fingers at each other, when they really should just be pointing fingers at you. You were a complete asshole back in 2010, and you never changed.
Viral Dragon - meh
Paradoxum - something something bot something
Rest of the staff I don't know, but I will point out that I'm still kind of surprised that Skorp became a staff. Not in a bad way, but more of a "wait what just happened?" way. Heh. It's now 2016, and Skorp is the only staff I know. Times sure change.
Final things:
Don't know where to put this but I'll say it now: what's the point of postwhoring, I don't get it at all. Same goes for userbar whoring, only join the groups that apply to you, why over extend? Also, I have no clue why people actually ask as to why they are denied uber. If you take a peek at their profile, you can tend to see why immediately. I was accepted for uber around 4 hours after I applied.
I did a quick write up based off of some things I wanted to say, and I'll add more as I see necessary. Here's to the ones that made this forum the way it is today, which in really is all of you.
tl;dr times change, internet as a whole has gotten lighter, don't be an asshat to normals, if you see a problem 'fix don't bitch', sections are the way they are, staff are chill
First shoutouts are to people like sleepy, nK, & ibi, miss you fuckers. This quote is for you: "The beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning. Well then, let us begin again. And to each, their own tale". This is late and all, but jokes on you I do have an HF account. Hope you guys are still alive, because the way sleepy went I'm not too sure.
shoutouts to everyone in the crypto section as I mentioned above; icy, for being someone extremely intelligent to talk to for the past two and a half years; lyralei, you know why; aura, the code will be done one day but not today; zym/protag/gator/ichi/chr/p0ny/pantsu/others not listed from the elusive TS; everyone in AA, great group of people; and finally everyone back in void, both those who are now closed, those that slowly left, and those that are still here, you guys were awesome.
oh and first person to find this gets something random, msg me over skype
hmm...
If you feel I'm missing something or whatever either post on the thread or pm me.
When I'm looking into the sunset I'm looking for you.
I miss my old friends and the days of less restrictions.
