Because they know that if you care about the domain and if it becomes popular people will be willing to spend more money renewing the domain at possibly $15 per year.

What people don't realize is having a domain for just 1 year doesn't help with get ranked up unless its a name that isn't popular.

I like to start a new website for $0.99 and see how things go and if I like it I normally will extend the domain out a few extra years.

You gotta pay extra for private whois if your fake the whois and they find out they will take your domain.

Yes, but you will have to create a different account on NetworkSolutions for any additional domains and possibly use a different payment method (not 100% on that last part).
