Honestly (This is gonna sound stupid), Sword Art Online Arc. 1 made me cry. A LOT. It probably shouldn't have been very sad but I got really attached to that show and in the end I cried.

SAO? No, please leave.

I would recommend you Kokoro connect or White Album 2.

Totally depends on who you are. As with anything, some like it, some don't. Personally I'd say it's totally worth a shot for anyone to try. :)

Not gonna lie, I came onto this thread to post SAO on here - when I saw this I was like OMG I'm not the only one. Like around episode 12-14, that is some sad ass shit right there, I guess it just really gets to people if you get really attached to the characters. I was actually depressed for about two days and I still haven't gone any further in the show because it will just make me sad.

I actually liked SAO when I first saw it. I really wish they stopped with S1 since I felt S2 was unnecessary to an already good anime ending with the first season.

Now as for some actual recommendations, perhaps you can look into stuff like Clannad: After Story (I haven't watched it yet, I believe there is the first Clannad before it, but I often hear its one of the most saddening anime), Chobits, and I've also heard Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is sad as well.

NANA - The end of this show broke me. It's 47 episodes long, but worth every minute of watching. The show has many moments that make you want to scream out at the characters. If you're not into shoujo don't watch it though, you probably won't enjoy it.

Clannad, Clannad: After Story, and the OVAs - super emotional series with some underrated OVAs. You'll bawl your eyes out at the end. Can't even watch the openings without choking a little

White Album 2 - Went into this by recommendation, this show is so, so good. Makes you feel very sympathetic towards a certain character.

Anohana - 11 episodes, you can't be human if you don't feel some kind of way at the end and throughout.

Kanon (2006) - Nobody ever mentions this show because they're too busy talking about Clannad, but this show is just as good, if not better.

Your Lie in April - Classical music everywhere. I'm a big fan of classical music which might be a reason I enjoyed it so much, but I didn't find it as sad as some others. Still thought it was worth mentioning for the genre though.

I SUGGEST WATCHING RAINBOW.
