Cincinnati Zoo shot and killed the 17-year-old Harambe after the boy fell into a moat inside gorilla exhibit on Saturday
Authorities said boy crawled through railing and fell about 10ft, and spent more than 10 minutes in the enclosure
Witness heard boy saying he wanted to get in the water, but his mother, who was taking care of several children, told him 'no'
Boy was taken to hospital with serious but 'non-life threatening' injuries
More than a thousand have joined Facebook group 'Justice for Harambe'
Others blamed parents for not looking after their son and called it 'murder'
Western lowland gorillas are deemed critically endangered by WWF

RIP Harambe
This reminds of the lions who were recently shot. It's so sad that people can't have some respect and foresight for these endangered animals... They clearly need to look into the design of their Zoo as well imo.

why not just get rid of zoos. if you want to see animals go to the wild and spectate from afar
Disband the Zoo's and the aquariums like sea world. They're only adding to the continued increase of endangered species. I was going to make a comment about holding animals at the same respect we hold for each other but then I realized that we as a human race seem to hold no respect for any life, only money. (This obviously does not apply to every single human)
This was obviously a tough decision to make since in a situation like this tranquilizers wouldn't of been effective quick enough, and with a gorilla of that size he could rip of the child's head in an instant.
Stupid kid.

Well, I can't disagree with that, but tbh that won't happen. At least not right away. Even Sea World is still around after half a century of animal abuse.

I actually hold animals in higher standard to be completely honest. I agree with you completely. I would have been completely torn, even if it was a child, the gorilla didn't necessarily deserve to die.

I sometimes feel the same way to be honest. I've never been fucked over by an animal. (Except when my dogs decided to battle a porcupine which resulted in a $1000 vet trip)
I remember hearing one time this doctor saying that Animal's don't experience emotion, which any one who's ever owned a pet would know is not true in the slightest.
The gorilla didn't deserve to die. But neither did the kid. And in this case it goes to show that we do value human life more over animal life. But not many options were available that would of guaranteed the safety of the child while allowing the gorilla to live.
Hopefully the mother learns to keep an eye on her kids better. (Although as a 4 year old I did take off for almost an hour into the woods, came back, really confused why my mother was balling her eyes out lmao, I just wanted to go for a hike).

I gree to a point.
But.
They would go extinct for sure then due to poachers and what not.
At least, even in captivity, they wont get poached into extinction ...
Human stupidity : Buying something they have no clue about, and then ask if they wasted their money.

Really there was 1 of 2 options, 1) Take the risk of the child being endangered and shoot the gorrilla 2) Take the risk of the Gorilla saving his life and change the future but if it fails then the Zoo gets closed down.
Its a hard one if you look at it from there perspective.
I saw the video of what happened and besides the part where the gorilla dragged the boy 10 feet through the water it didn't seem like he meant the boy harm.
I've seen this before. The gorilla was aiming to raise it as one of his own.
Not to mention it's funny how the media labels the Gorilla a thug. 100% the media would never show this side of him:

I was actually wondering this same thing. I'm not certain a gorilla would be intentionally aggressive toward a child. Animals are usually very smart when it comes to this kind of thing, especially primates. Yes, there are some exceptions, but my point remains. Some animals will even act docile toward pregnant women because they can sense that she's carrying a baby.
These sort of stories sadden me to no end, Zoo's fault for allowing a kid to access the cage no matter what, the gorilla didn't know any better it's not it's fault and it shouldn't die. Do gorillas even kill humans for the most part, most video's that I've seen they seemed passive and curious?

lol they can read body language just like we can but it's their main source of communication like with most animals. They don't physically sense an unborn child on another creature, they can just tell by how passive you appear.

I agree. I don't condone zoos, but there are plenty that operate without such easy access to animal pens. No, gorillas are incredibly passive when compared to other primates ime. Of course like any animal, they're quite dangerous when they feel threatened, even more so due to their size. However, I really don't think a gorilla would interpret a small child as a threat. If anything, he/she would be more curious than anything. Animals in captivity are notorious for being unpredictable though, and they can offer suffer from mental illness. Sea World is more than enough proof of this. I definitely don't blame the poor gorilla. If that gorilla felt aggressive towards the child, I'm sure he would be dead. I'm not sure why zoos aren't equipped with powerful sedatives like sufentanil, carfentanil or ketamine.

No, animals can detect subtle changes in biology such as scent. Animals don't necessarily possess the same senses as us, or to the same acuity. A lot of animals can identify a pregnant woman by her scent/pheromones.

I've found no evidence supporting the claim primates can smell if you're pregnant.

"We don't have scientific proof that pets sense their owners' pregnancies"
Specifically pets are dogs, dogs smell much better than primates. If a dog cannot smell and determine you are pregnant, what makes you think a monkey can smell and determine that?
I stand by my original assumption that they just read body language well.
