I guess Team Mystic is pretty good one where I live at least.
Seems like Team Mystic and Team Valor are the most common Teams being chosen.

To join a team, go near a gym and click on the gym, it will show you a tutorial on how to join one and it lets you pick a color. Yellow, Blue or Red.

In order to chose a team, I don't think you need to be a certain rank. Just find a gym near your current location and just click on it.

It will give you a tutorial on how Gyms work and you are able to chose a Color of Yellow, Red & Blue.

Then you just chose what team you want to become a part of =D
