Moving from desktop to Laptop

Over the last year or so I have completely lost interest in gaming and have recently been thinking about parting it out and buying a laptop with the money
I can't decide if it's the right choice or not. What I intentionally built it for I no longer do, so now it just takes up a far bit of room. On the other hand, it was the
first PC I built so I'm somewhat attached to it.

I have slowly been moving into the coding/programming/design frame of mind. Have always worked better when I can get up, move around etc.. Sitting in the one
stop doesn't help me at all. I know that my desktop can do anything a Laptop will be able to do and vice versa.

I'm in two frames of mind. One wants to do it, the other doesn't. It's driving me mad.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Well some laptops can even play high end games so you can do both coding/programming & gaming

Yeah, not too worried about games. Takes up to much time. Sit down for an hour end up playing for several.
Would like to be more productive with my time

I personally would be very attached, especially if it was my first computer that I built with my own hands. You could always just keep the system and turn it into a server or something so you can stream video/music etc. and then buy a mediocre laptop, since coding doesn't need much power. So you have a laptop for the mobility and a still have your first computer.
I can sympathise with you over your reluctance to part with your Desktop. It took me a while to move on and upgrade my old tower. It was running a cracked Windows 2000! But I was heavily into sound/ music at that time and liked the fact you had deeper control over midi than you do with Later versions of Windows, but I bit the bullet and moved on. I'm seriously considering building up an Amiga 1 system from scratch as a technical exercise. I liked the feel and user friendly Amiga OS a lot. With some of the Platforms that the New Amiga 1 OS can run on it could become a SERIOUS machine, and a blast of nostalgia for me. As regards Laptops. Look at number crunching power when it comes to Coding. So an i5 or similar AMD chip set as a basic starting point. There are some good basic machines out there, even some of the less mainstream manufacturers are making some pretty good tech these days.( a lot of it is coming from China so do your homework though). Go for it and as the previous poster suggested you could always reconfigure your desktop as a server. That could even place it in the resale market better.Good luck on your quest.
Look ahead a few months if not years from now. Would you see yourself be coding/designing wherever you go, or will you be glued to your seat in your mancave? With some research, you can find a laptop that is just as powerful as a desktop. It will then just boils down to accessibility.

Defiantly one way to stop some gaming urges considering some great titles are not available.
Save money, buy a laptop and don't get rid of the desktop.

IMHO, if you want to start a new path, a new set of mind.. Get rid of your Desktop. It does not define you, I know that we get emotionally attached to things, I do it a lot. But I think that if you are serious about changing yourself, thus your life, get rid of old things and start from scratch.

Cheers.

A few years back, I went through the same dilemma. I was always a desktop guy, but I found myself moving away from gaming. I still wanted to be able to use my office setup though. Dual monitors, external mouse, keyboard, etc. After much deliberating, I ended up buying a Dell Latitude with a docking station. It has worked out great for me. I can still use all of my equipment, and it works out great when I need to work from home because my company laptop is also a Latitude, so I can just dock it, and work.
Could get the newest razer laptop that is 1k. Has latest USB Type C charger and is incredibly portable. Plus if down the road you want to play games again there will be an adapter to plug in an external video card with an enclosure. Check it oot.

I was in exactly the same position a few years ago.

In the end, I sold my pc, bought a laptop and had a bit of money left over. I won't lie, at first I hated my laptop. In fact, the first time I was on it I thought "I can't see myself using this that often". Everything about it just felt odd. It was too squashed together and felt like I had no room to move about. Now however, I absolutely love it. It's one of the best decisions I ever made and I'm hardly ever off it! I can be sat on my sofa working away or if I'm feeling a bit fucked, I can crawl into bed and work away whilst chilling out in bed.

I say go for it dude, you won't be disappointed.

If you're a coder, more than one monitor is essential IMO, so you'd need a desk...Meaning you may as well keep the desktop. Plus desktops are just better.
