All the mainstream 'normal' anime we watch is frowned upon?

I was doing some research about weeboos and anime culture within japan in general and I read lots of people stating that the anime we watch (as in, what the western population watch) is shown on late night television in japan and anyone who watches it are normally considered weird and 'otaku' (I don't know if i'm using that word right).

So for example:
attack on titan is considered otaku because its shown and was originated on late night televisions (but I believe its becoming more mainstream in japan, but also One Piece is losing its mainstream popularity)
Fuck I bet any of the anime you've watched or watching is considered otaku in japan is often aired late at night.

Shows like sazae-san are considered the normal when 90% of us have never heard of it.

So back to the main discussion of this thread.
The anime we generally watch is considered strange even to the country that its originated from. How come, in our western society we don't have an equivalency of 'late night television'. Well, we do have late night television but it's not frowned upon or seen weird to watch them shows.

Thoughts?

Idk I just like watching anime idc what people think about it.

But I guess its a normal thing to watch it over there also so not sure why it would be considered weird.

Haha same, I watch it for entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. It's just this research that I did just make me think that the anime that i'm watching (like right now watching, i'm watching Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon) is highly frowned upon by a whole country lmao.

Sazae-san has been on the air since 1969 so I'm pretty sure its gonna be considered normal

Actually western countries do have late night television shows/animation. You know all those cheesy shows you see on Adult Swim? Family Guy, Venture Bros, etc. We do share that in common with Japan, but our ideals and methods about creating animation are way different. You could say its more because of cultural differences. Japanese animation is slowly making its way around the world but that is really only in terms of distribution. Western countries have yet to produce replicas mainly because it is a new concept with mix beliefs.

I think you may have misinterpreted what an otaku is though.

People are considered otakus when it comes to anime because they simply enjoy their fandom enough to do things that are considered over the top to the norms. Cosplay would be a prime example of that. Most of us are otakus though because we simply like anime enough to go to the next level and collect merchandise. But being a weeb is like basically taking it to the next level beyond that. Which is frowned in mainstream society because people are so flamboyant about it that they apply it to their every day lives.

Thanks for the detailed and extensive response.

The part that I was trying to get out about the comparison of late night television to ours is that you aren't considered weird or the western equivalent of otakus (whatever that is) because you watch adult swim at 1am.

Like the animes that we watch here and enjoy aren't what most of japans native anime viewers enjoy or are exposed to because they are mostly sleeping at 1am.

I don't know if i'm explaining my thoughts correctly but w/e I just find it weird how late night television in japan is different to our late night television and not because of the content we show but because of how that content is looked upon.

Don't really care if something is mainstream or not, and could care less if I am judged for having a pastime that I enjoy in my spare time. If its quality, done well and enjoyable I don't see a reason why not to watch it.

I get where you're coming from.

You're basically saying that Japan perceives anime differently because they're usually watching new releases late at night, as compared to us western viewers who cope it online and tend to watch more than one episode of the same show in one sitting.

I like to think of it like this though: In the states we have Toonami. Japan has their own TV networks which are their equivalence of Toonami. In both countries there is a fair share of viewers that ritualistically watch new episodes every week; Except Japan is actually able to watch anime every day though.

I do like to think the Japanese perceive anime differently though. It has been apart of their culture for a long time, and compared to how other countries view it, the significance is seemingly less "wow" worthy to them because they see it like we see everyday cartoons.
Might be just me, but so what?
As long as I can enjoy an anime, I'll fucking watch it.
I don't care what others think about it.
If people think the anime I watch = weird, I simply won't tell them I watch it.
They won't have to know.
