Samurai Champloo
Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL): Spoiler (Click to View)Fuu Kasumi is a young and clumsy waitress who spends her days peacefully working in a small teahouse. That is, until she accidentally spills a drink all over one of her customers! With a group of samurai now incessantly harassing her, Fuu desperately calls upon another samurai in the shop, Mugen, who quickly defeats them with his wild fighting technique, utilizing movements reminiscent to that of breakdancing. Unfortunately, Mugen decides to pick a fight with the unwilling ronin Jin, who wields a more precise and traditional style of swordfighting, and the latter proves to be a formidable opponent. The only problem is, they end up destroying the entire shop as well as accidentally killing the local magistrate's son.
For their crime, the two samurai are captured and set to be executed. However, they are rescued by Fuu, who hires the duo as her bodyguards. Though she no longer has a place to return to, the former waitress wishes to find a certain samurai who smells of sunflowers and enlists the help of the now exonerated pair to do so. Despite initially disapproving of this idea, the two eventually agree to assist the girl in her quest; thus, the trio embark upon an adventure to find this mysterious warrior—that is, if Fuu can keep Mugen and Jin from killing each other.
Set in an alternate Edo Period of Japan, Samurai Champloo follows the journey of these three eccentric individuals in an epic quest full of action, comedy, and dynamic sword fighting, all set to the beat of a unique hip-hop infused soundtrack.
Samurai Champloo OP (Don't want to spoil the anime, so here's the OP for ya'll ;) ): Spoiler (Click to View)
Quite literally to put it, this is another gem in the vast realm of anime. Once again Shinichiro Watanabe (director of Cowboy Bebop for the newbs) and his team have managed yet again to entertain us in a almost "pulp-fiction" fashion. If anything, the anime in its entirety is a fusion of multiple genres, animation styles, music, and more. The actual plot of the story is quite simple, yet the overall story is quite layered, slowly being peeled away as each episode progresses. Pacing is never a concern in the semi-mundane time period that the story portrays, yet the anime concerns itself with the journey as more important than the end goal. The characters, while starting off as archetypal, are able to develop over the entire series. An interesting characteristic of this motley band however unlike most anime is their reluctance to stay together, whereas a typical anime would have all the MCs together as friends.
One of the noteworthy characteristics of this anime is the influence of the music with the overall performance. Along with the memorable OP, there are many instances where Hip-Hop influences are very much integrated with blues and traditional Japanese styles. The animation itself is a beautiful mesh.
My final thoughts regarding this anime is that it decided to take the axiom of anime and spin it in a new direction. Fun, quirky, and full of action & surprises, you won't be disappointed with Samurai Champloo ;)

I always loved this anime as it was one of the few that I watched aired dubbed on adult swim/toonami possibly. I highly enjoy the dubbed version of this, haven't watched it subbed, I watch everything subbed now a days though. This is the type of anime you can rewatch IMO, I have before atleast.
While not topping Cowboy Bebop on my list of "Anime Staples", Samurai Champloo definitely comes in at a close second (or third). A must watch for anyone interested in watching anime for the culture and community rather than just entertainment as Samurai Champloo can be brought up and referenced many, many times. A great review and a great show. Thanks DM.
One of the first Anime I watched and enjoyed it heaps. Got me into listening to Nujabes and definitely haven't regretted it. Would strongly recommend this to anyone even remotely interested in Anime.
