Notorious - Setting up & using KeePass Offline Password Manager

Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.

Welcome to my first tutorial. I decided to make something that would help the over all security of anyone with a online account. KeePass is a secure offline password manager that uses AES & Twofish encryption. I recommend this to anyone who has multiple accounts and want's to use unique passwords for every one without remembering them all. I will be updating this over the next few days, been busy with school.

Picking a version.

KeePass offers different versions. The Classic Edition is the version I use, both are pretty much the same. The other version would be the Professional Edition. The download is located here.

How to setup a database file?

KeePass is very easy to setup. First off download either edition and install/run KeePass. If you are using Windows then proceed to the step after this.

Linux Install

This is pretty simple. Simply just run this as Root and Bingo!

Code
sudo apt-get install keepass2

From here you will need to open KeePass and it will prompt to open or create a new database file where everything is stored.

It will first ask for a new Master Key, this can be anything you want but do remember it because if you do not have a key file you will probably be locked out of you're KeePass database. Spoiler (Click to View)

Re-Enter the Master Key again to confirm. Then you are presented with this screen.

To add a account/login/etc. Click on the Green Arrow Down Key button, this will prompt a new entry to be added. Spoiler (Click to View)

As you can also see it generates a password automatically for you and you can manually edit the settings by clicking the box right next to the repeat bar. Spoiler (Click to View)

You can also set a Expires on to help remember to keep fresh new passwords on you're accounts. The Edit tab allows you to do most things editing wise for example adding a new entry or organizing the groups. My favorite feature is the auto-type, it types in the login for you quickly. You can also use plugins with KeePass which can be found here. KeePass can also work on many different systems including Android and iPhone. Hope this helped you guys out today. If you need any help don't hesitate to drop me a PM.

Pretty good tutorial to get people in the habit of using better passwords.
Good guide. This is the password manager I always recommend. I am not a fan at all of LastPass, despite its popularity.
When I attended my security class my teacher told me this was a must, nice tutorial.
Nice tutorial!

Thought I posted that already (:

Yes and for the main reason LastPass is cloud based, this is 100% offline. You can even use Key Files encase you loose you're password or don't want to type it in at that time. It's really easy to keep things organized too. Plus you can write notes, etc.
I like to write my passwords down on a piece of paper, do you recommend this?
Pretty useful, thanks! :)
Yeah nice tutorial I have been using keepassx for 2 years now!
Thanks for the tutorial, gonna set it up now.

Also, I'll be sure to include this in Notable Threads for the HF News next week. Thanks. 👍

Aw, Thanks man(:

You could for offline but if someone found them that could pose a risk but you can always burn it if you keep a lighter nearby.
