Difference between a RAT and Botnet

The title says it all, I just want to know the difference between a RAT and Botnet?

And which is better?

Best Regards
x
Botnets typically infect IoT devices for DDOS attacks.
Rats are for remotely controlling computers/phones for file downloads, spying, and password stealing.

That's not true.
You have IoT botnets like Mirai, but most botnets are aimed at computers.
The difference between a RAT and a botnet is the scale. A botnet is capable of holding thousands of clients. Also, often botnets are used for more illegal activities (for example, banking trojans and stealing creditcard credentials).

RATs are best to use if you have a couple computer which you want total control over, or if you want to have more functions (for example, reverse socks which isn't available on many botnets).

Still, a botnet can also do what a RAT can do, as long as you pick those functoins. For example, you've got botnets with hidden VNC, keyloggers, pass recovery, reverse socks and whatever you might need.
A botnet is a collection of infected computer devices. Often used to carry out ddos attacks.
RAT is simply short for Remote Administration Tool. It is pretty self-explanatory. On this site, it is often for a malicious intend.

That is correct answer to your question and which is better ? It depends what you really need. If you want run ddos attacks, use http, irc or iot botnet. If you want to spy on your little kid(see screen, capture keystrokes etc) use RAT.

Please Which botnet got HVNC, and unicode keylogger? Are you certain about this?
Botnet is used for controlling a large number of devices and giving large groups of devices commands. Rats are used for more specific operations on a infect by infect basis. Botnets come in to flavors, IRC and HTTP.

Types of botnets (off the top of my head)
IOT
Exploit based (pma etc..)
POS and banking botnets (discussion not allowed on this forum so don't ask me about them)
IRC Botnets
HTTP Botnets
Botseller Botnets (Designed to handle a large number of clients with minimal overhead)
and more ( None come to mind but there are other types out there.

Botnets != IOT. In year 2017 IOT are the more popular types of botnets. But its only because IOT is new and very vulnerable. I can bet in 1 year IOT botnets will have a similar infect rate as consumer routers.

IOT is the popular botnet of 2016/2017 because how new IOT is but botnets != IOT. Botnets are designed for less commands more bots where rats are usually more commands less bots. Botnets C & C are usually IRC or HTTP based where RATs usually are application based.

IOT isn't something new. It is actually quite an arbitrary term. Any appliance with a internet connection will fall under that group. It is just becoming increasingly more popular.

Just a friendly reminder to read my reply before correcting me. I didn't say IOT was new. I said IOT botnets are new.

Mirai - surfaced in 2016
BASHLITE (lizardstresser/qbot/Torlus) - The original BASHLITE botnet surfaced in 2014 and exploited Shellshock not IOT. It wasn't until 2016ish when lizardstresser and the other varients surfaced that bots of botnets of BASHLITE varients were primarily IOT via bruting.

As for botnets the IOT botnets popularity only started rising in late 2015
infecting iot machines goes back to as far as 2012 (which is only when i knew about it god knows how long it went before that)
so no sir, its not new

Smokeloader, Kronos, Diamondfox..

Okay, doesn't make much of a difference. IOT is decades old at this point, and so is IOT botnets.
You understand that saying "The original BASHLITE botnet surfaced in 2014 and exploited Shellshock not IOT", is nonsense, even so you are correct.
It is kinda like saying "The windows wormvirus botnet exploited the windows subsystem and not the computer!".
Bashlite had a extremely high percentage of IOT devices because the nature of many of these IOT devices; employ and forget with minimal security.

Long before. Probably mid 90's.

If so what is a name of a iot purposed botnet or botnet variant from the 90s or even early 2000s

Actually your wrong and its not like saying that at all. Non of bashlights IOT varients existed before 2014.

Please Indulgence me with the name of a IOT based botnet from before the 90's

And remember When people say IOT botnets they aren't refering to Everything that is connected to the internet. They are referring to devices embedded devices, raspberry pi's, heart monitor chips, weight sensors. alarm systems, house hold appliances.

Yes technically IOT is things connected to the internet. But when technical people say IOT device they aren't referring to a computer because they would just call that device a host, client, end device

I'm not going to debate this with you any further. If you want to deny facts then I can't stop you.
