Due to the wave of incoming members into the crypto scene, and especially with the Crypto subforum split into many more specific topics, The Illusionist and I have decided to start a Cryptocurrency Mining help desk to promote and help cultivate the mining scene on HF.
Whether your question pertains to...- hardware selection or purchase
- setting up your OS/miner
- overclocking help
- stability of mining
or.. you're just a newbie who islooking to learn the ropes of mining, feel free to drop it in the form of a post reply below, and one of us will get back to you with the desired information you seek!
FAQ:
Q: Do you think * ASIC is a good investment?
A: ASICs are a long-term investment. Be aware of the terms you are purchasing your hardware on, and calculate for future profitability(when you will get it, possible difficulty increase, etc.) If you do end up purchasing an ASIC from Bitmain or another source, they can be great paycheck that will return its purchase for many months to come.
Q: Should I sell my hashing power directly to NiceHash, or mine directly with a pool?
A: If you plan on investing money into dedicated builds, I would optimally mine directly with a pool. NiceHash generally charges a larger fee, and has software issues with more than 3-4 GPUs. Plus you don't get that sweet price increase money when your coin goes up in value.
Q: What wallet should I mine to?
A: Always generate your own keys using a trusted local application. As long as you have the private key to the address you are mining to, you should not have to worry about using a CERTAIN wallet with a CERTAIN coin. Do diligent research and find an application to suit your needs.
Q: What coin is most profitable to mine?
A: Depending on graphics cards/CPUs and coin difficulty, profitability may change over time. See coinwarz or other data-aggregates to determine the profitability of your hashing power.
Q: Should I invest in a rig?
A: If you have high electricity costs, avoid it. If your budget is below capacity of parts, avoid it. If you plan on buying the cheapest parts, avoid it. I would not invest money into a rig unless I was certain it was profitable. Advise current market pricing and mining profitability before making decisions. Expect all rigs to be an ROI of between 4-12 months, results may vary.
Q: How can I start mining * coin?
A: Check out message boards dedicated to the specific coin, you may be able to receive support there.
Q: Is botnet mining profitable?
A: Why would someone sell you something for less than it was worth? If you have to ask this question, consider not taking this route. It'll only be a money sink.
Q:
A:
I'll start with some questions :D
Can you explain how to set up:
-auto start mining on PC startup
-auto reboot after errors, something fails in hardware, or power outage
Will probably be using Claymore Dual, but it would be cool if it wasn't software specific so it would help anyone else.

Setting up mining on PC startup is easy, do WINDOWS+R or 'Run.exe' and execute "shell:startup", and then paste a shortcut of your executable file there.
Auto reboot after power outage or other full reboot will depend on your motherboard, but look for a setting in your bios called "Restore on AC/Power Loss", or "AC Power Recovery", or "After Power Loss". Make sure this setting is on and in case of a power outage or something where the hardware is no longer powered, it will become powered as available.
Claymore Dual detects when GPUs aren't preforming well and does a reset of the miner. This will allow you to play with your settings and test what hashrates you can push.
Best of luck!
Do you think the bitmain antminer L3+ is a good investment?

If the Antminer L3+ actually gives 504MH/s in Litecoin then yes definitely. But the claims they make for the price seems very off. I would suggest you not buy it on release but wait for customer reviews first. With current rates, it would mean you earn $1000 per month on a $1370 machine. Seems a bit off.

Thanks for your reply, but the latest batch costs more, it costed about 2200$ including the power supply, I hope it's good, but it won't get here until October. Cause they ship end September.

It's probably a good investment, but there's only so many that were available to be sold. And also the difficulty rates will only be increasing until the time you get the miner.
MSI Afterburner detects my GPUs (RX 580s) but doesn't allow me to change any settings on them even though I have enabled third party overclocking, voltage monitoring, etc. I have uninstalled it completely, reinstalled it, and still same result. I've tried changing drivers as well, and same result. I am 99% sure this is because I have the Bios of my GPUs flashed.
Can you recommend a fix or a different program to use? PowerColor and Asus branded cards.
What's the payout on Nicehash vs. using Claymore directly? Say I'm dual-mining ETH + altcoin.
I'm assuming you couldn't give specifics, but was wondering if you had any experience on if it's worth it to use Nicehash and be paid directly in BTC too.

Do you get an error while changing the settings in Afterburner? Or what happens exactly when you say "doesn't allow me to change any settings"

Honestly, it all depends on Altcoin prices what is the most profitable thing of doing. You just have to try both scenarios for like a day to see what profit you generate.

It won't show the voltages or memory clocks. The sliders are all at 0 and cannot be moved.
Do you think that Antminer L3+ will have notable impact on the mining scene? Also should invest on mining now or wait for its impact?

What motherboard do you use? Sometimes new motherboards need a BIOS update. This can be done by downloading the BIOS and putting it on a USB. Within the BIOS of the motherboard, you can simply update it.

It's an msi z170 gaming m5. Bios is the latest version already. I have the crypto mining mode enabled.

Private Message me your Skype, maybe we can hop on Teamviewer or w/e and I can check what's going on.
