August 1st Mega Help Desk

As we near August 1st, more and more people are going to be asking about what will happen, how to avoid any problems, and how to get out of any problems.

Things you can do to prepare right now
  • Move your Bitcoin to a wallet that you control the private keys!

  • Understand what Bitcoin Cash (BCC) is and who supports it

  • View wallets that support the User Activated Soft Fork here (this will be for SegWit2x supporters).

  • View wallets that support the User Activated Hard Fork here (this will be for BCC supporters).

  • Keep up-to-date on the news.

  • Beware of orphaned blocks and reorgs. Wait for 6-8 confirmations to avoid double spending and various other possible attacks on the blockchain(s).

  • The safest option is converting to fiat. This is your choice of course.

The Difference Between the UASF and UAHF
  • The User Activated Soft Fork will be supporting SegWit2x and your current BTC will be the same coin. This has been the more favored plan.

  • The User Activated Hard Fork will be supporting Bitcoin Cash. This is a completely new coin such as when Bitcoin Classic became legacy. This is an UNLIKELY OUTCOME due to the 100% support for UASF. Major exchanges and top mining pools suggested they will support BCC/alongside UASF.

It is vital you all understand everything about what is happening and what may happen. Post anything and I will try to help you understand.

Couple questions:

For UASF, do we need to do anything with our bitcoin? e.g. Move it from Coinbase to external wallet

Can certain services (pools, exchanges, wallets) not support both, UASF and UAHF, or do they have to support at least one of them?

I haven't managed to find the time to look up on the details for UASF and USHF, but your links are useful. Thanks KJ, appreciate the thread.

All UASF supporters will update their clients.

Yes, both can be supported by adding additional nodes. I know viabtc.com is supporting both: https://pool.viabtc.com/pool/bcc/state/
If I keep my BTC in multibit, will I be able to claim BCC for the same amount after August 1?

I saw that Coinbase will not be supporting Bitcoin Cash. I currently have some money in Coinbase that I am not wanting to invest into Bittrex currently. If I keep my money in the Bitcoin Wallet on Coinbase, what will happen? Thanks for doing this to clear up any thoughts. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question.
I have like 95% of my crypto in offline storage rn, although do have some BTC in blockchain.info. What happens if I keep it in there?

Get your BTC out of Multibit. Multibit HD hasn't even been updated since March. Lack of updates and work by devs show no support for anything right now. If there are two chains you should be able to choose which one to go with.

Coinbase will update for SegWit2x. Coinbase also doesn't let you control your private keys so I suggest you get them out of there ASAP as they have had a backlog of transactions for awhile now. If you're looking to go with BCC, find a wallet that supports it from the resources I provided in the OP.

I haven't heard of Blockchain supporting the UASF, move your funds out of the web wallet to a place where you control your private keys completely. If you don't have the seed and didn't get the mnemonic already, you should do that now.
Where do I put my btc if I need free BCC?

What if I don't want to go with Bitcoin Cash and keep using BTC instead? Should I go with a wallet that supports UASF?

Shoes you supported Wallets and exchanges. With 100% support for UASF right now it's unlikely UAHF will happen. I should probably clarify this in the OP. I'm only talking about BCC since I've seen a few threads and several questions about it.

Yes. Coinbase supports UASF, but you can't control your private keys. Find one that does: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=5680116

Thanks for the help, Kill Joy. I will most likely be looking into Electrum as an offline wallet.

So it I put my btc in bittrex I'll get equivalent bcc?
I'm a bit confused in regards to how backing up wallets works.

So I've got a decent amount of Bitcoin spread across about 5 different platforms (Polo, Bittrex, Blockchain etc). If I want to consolidate them for Aug 1, how would I go about doing so?

So far, I've downloaded and synced a Bitcoin Core client, but obviously that wouldn't support Bitcoin Cash right?

Could you direct me as to how to backup so I'll have both versions of Bitcoin? :)
If i just left my btc in blockchain would anything happen?
