Policy Question

Deep or dark web

(Aug 21, 2017 03:53 PM)Elitas Wrote:  Noooo you're thinking of Mariana's web. Not what I am referencing!

The deep web are websites which are not indexed on google and require usually a complex and hidden link to visit, they are usually associated with extremely illegal activity.

TOR websites are included within the deep web as they are not indexed, but I like to call this the dark web.

Hence why the deep web are now referring to websites on the clearnet which are not indexed by a search engine (as mentioned above) and are generally a little hidden.

Dark Net = TOR.

Anything that isn't publicy indexed is apart of the deep web. onion based domains are apart of the dark web. TOR has nothing to do with the dark web, it just has an onion capable extension.

I think you're getting a little confused, you mixed up a few words there.

I'm not exactly sure if TOR qualifies as the deep web as it is actually indexed by engines such as TORCH.

Deep web is still websites which are not indexed, so they aren't the same thing - That's for sure!

As much as I wish the Mariana's web was true, it's not.
Any thing related to deep web/dark web discussion is disallowed.

Discussions about TOR is allowed.

Aren't they just the same thing?

Making a simple reference to a market and actually discussing it are two different things.

Nah, the Deep Web is the surface. The Dark Web is where all the torture, human trafficking, and naughtiness goes on.

Yeah I know it's not true, that's not what I'm referring to!

Deep Web = Websites not indexed by Google which are usually used in illegal activity.

It seems Omni was referring to TOR but called it the deep web. I agree that this rule does need some more clarification as I have seen multiple users talking about TOR and claiming that it is not against the rules yet there is no quote from Omni stating that it is specifically allowed on here.

"usually used in illegal activity"
Don't comment on threads if you got no clue what the fuck you're talking about. Deep web is not usually illegal activity. It's your banking, corporate, medical, social media (private accounts), schooling, and government resources/data.
I agree this rule needs to be explained more, However as a lot of people have spot on answers about the difference i won't type the difference :P

Quote:The part of the World Wide Web that is not discoverable by means of standard search engines, including password-protected or dynamic pages and encrypted networks.

These are publicly accessible pages on the clearnet which are not indexed by any standard search engines.

The majority of these websites which I can think of would be associated with blackhat activity, hence where the conclusion was drawn that the majority of deep web sites are involved in illegal activity.

I mean, obviously there are hidden pages on the internet which are not indexed and can't be found through links. However, the majority of deep web sites I have come across (heard about being closed down in the news) would be involved in illegal activity. Mostly all large deep web sites would be involved in illegal activity, hence why they are not looking to be indexed by standard search engines.

Unfortunately incorrect.

I understand your confusion- as some pages that are not indexed, are not indexed because they are of value in the wrong hands.

But anyway; you shouldn't have wasted your time. I already explained this early in the thread ;)

Page caches, website previews, site databases, encrypted password bits and the like are all part of the deep web- but are not malicious. Where'as the dark web is just a subsidiary that is used for illegal purposes.
For every page that is available on the surface web, there is one in the deep web. Hence why it is so vast in comparison.

Perhaps the rule could be adjusted so that non-surface web discussion, in general, is prohibited? That way, people can't 'unintentionally' break it.
This infographic explains it relatively well. (Click to View)

tl;dr:
Deep web: The non-indexed parts of websites, that cannot be accessed without visiting the address directly. Usually not malicious
Dark web: Another subset of the deep web, again- not indexed and can't be accessed without authentication or specific proxying software. It often sits on top of sub-networks, such as I2P, and Freenet, Tor, and is usually associated with criminal activity

That's a personal preference. Doesn't change the fact it's the same thing. I don't care if there are seven levels of Hell. It's all Hell. Obviously any discussion about the Deep Web is disallowed then it's going to mean dark web, hidden web, tor web, or any other terms that might apply. The regular web is run by ICANN and everything else is deep web.
