Policy Question

Deep or dark web

By the common definitions the deep web is run by ICANN and the dark web is not.
Quote:n layman's terms, the surface web is all content that is indexable by regular search engines, the deep web consists of all content that is not

Are you saying that just by adding a universal disallow in robots.txt that a website is part of the "deep web"? What credible sources tell you this? I think you're misinterpreting that because typically deep web sites CANNOT BE INDEXED because they can't be seen at all without special plugins or software like TOR. The "dark web" is just another term for "deep web" but meant to be more nefarious and infer evil. Doesn't change that the technology is the exact same.

Quote:The surface web is much smaller than the deep web, and every major website has deep web content.

Can you cite a source for this?

Quote:I've always interpreted policy to allow for the discussion of Tor and onion routing etc.

Correct. The policy in place is to prevent discussions and promotion of sites on the deep/dark web. That's the intent. So while it's not perfectly worded if you can understand the intent then you can likely figure out if the post is against it.

Quote:Tor shouldn't be associated with the dw. Tor is a common place browser, that benefits a variety of people who value their privacy- not just people who are interested in the dw.

Correct. That's why discussing TOR itself is not a policy violation.

Quote:The dark web has often been confused with the deep web, which refer to the parts of the web not indexed (searchable) by search engines. This confusion dates back to at least 2009.[10] Since then, especially in reporting on Silk Road, the two terms have often been conflated,[11][12][13] despite recommendations that they be distinguished.

Alright..fuck it. I take it all back. Appears I been wrong since 2009 (I'm old fart).

So to clarify, I'll just edit the Help Doc to state the Dark Web.

Problem solved I hope? Is that clear now?

This Source says the "There's a hidden part of the internet that is much larger than the parts of the web you use every day." 👹

So I guess that means the Deep web or the dark web is larger than the Surface web we use daily ..😅

Basically, after Some research, I think it's is hard,
to explore the contents and view them which is in the hidden part ... except for the Onion site, links that can be google can be found

It should be hidden for a reason ... So best thing is to use what we use daily

Quote:By some estimates, this part of the internet is estimated to be 400 to 500 times as large as the Surface Web.

Poor sources and that article counts databases and intranets. These aren't websites and "web" isn't the technical term for those.

You have indeed misunderstood... look it up
