Delphi

Why you should learn Delphi.

So this thread is based on people wondering if they should learn Delphi over other known languages like C++ VB.net Java Python Etc..

What is Delphi:
Delphi is owned by Embarcadero and has been previously owned by Borland, Kylix, Turbo, and Codegear. Delphi can write native code that can cross compile on Win32, Win64, Macintosh, Linux, IOS, Android, and also smart wearable's (watches, Google Glass etc...)

So why should I learn Delphi? You may ask. Here is why you should learn.
  • Delphi writes native code.
  • Delphi code can cross compile on many operating systems
  • Delphi syntax is easy to learn and reads like English.
  • There are THOUSANDS of resources and sources you can find
  • Delphi compiles faster than many languages (C++ included)
  • The IDE is very similar to others so if your familiar with other IDE's handling RAD studio will be no problem!
  • When developing applications for different devices you can have a separate view for each device.
  • You can deploy Android apps to your phone using a data transfer cable in ONE CLICK.
  • There are THOUSANDS of components for Delphi to make it easier and faster for you to develop

So now you know why to learn Delphi. But your wondering well how do I start.
The best way to start with Delphi is go and get yourself an IDE to use some commonly used ones are:
Note: If you want RAD Studio (best IDE) pm me and I can get it for you free!

So go out and learn Delphi guys!

This is a very nice post indeed, This is by far the most helpful post in this entire Section in my personal opinion other than just giving out source for people to learn from, and i know without a doubt that people will find this helpful when starting out with the Delphi Language.

@tcsh I agree there is so much more content that could be added to this! and Dexuh and I will collaborate and keep this thread updated over time.
Thanks alot man, Now i can go on my own in delphi.

Glad to see this helped 👍

I don't like this language.. It's from year, when dinosaurs were alive :-D In my previous irl job, I had to code in this piece of shit.. It was horrible. For example "begin" and "end" syntax. When I saw it for the first time, I thought that I will vomit

Please don't state that the language is shit because of a syntax.

It's a very simple syntax once you learn it and its more powerful than other languages known today.

I had to code in it for few months and I really hate it, not only for the syntax..

hmm.. ok man it seems to me that you are basing your decision off a "Shitty Job" now being in the workforce I think we can all agree that workplaces don't really tend to give their workers the best working environments and mainly this is due to Price.... so all i can say to this is i Bet money they gave you a SHITTY IDE to work with in the first place which in turn caused you to dislike this language because you had to use it in a "Shitty Environment" which makes things difficult for the programmer not to mention the fact that if you where new to the language then that most likely made it 1000x more difficult to get used to, and from the way you are bashing it I'm guessing you never got used to it.

The IDE we use now is worth well over $2000 - $4000 and has so any features it will blow your mind away.

Also since this is Hack forums I feel the need to mention that with this language you can produce applications for almost Every OS on the market which is Badass man, you show me another programming language which is capable of compiling over Million lines of code in less than 3 seconds, and can also produce multiple file outputs for multiple operating systems all from "ONE" code-base in other words "you write your code ONE Time" and produce secure and professional looking applications which are Cross platform RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX :) & DEPENDENCY FREE which 100% guarantees code WILL RUN no matter what!!! on any OS.

so why did i mention this because this is hackforums ? because "Real hackers / Developers" are HIGHLY interested in having their code run 100% of the time on any OS in the world guaranteed with 0 Dependencies. Lets face it its SEXY man lololol ;)

Ok lets move on to your statement about the begin and end lines of the pascal / Delphi Language.

You are aware that no matter what language you use there is always a beginning and and ending statement for just about everything you do and this has been the way of programming since its inception...... some languages end lines with a ";" some languages end statements or functions / procedures / classes with "}" symbols, when it boils right down to it they are practically all the same man. Personally I do not know why seeing an "end;" or "end." could possibly be confusing in any way its pure English which essentially tells you "That is the END of that function / procedure or Unit or Class ect... ect...

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with Delphi, you should let that company know that they are wasting time by developing software with old outdated IDE's "If thats truly the case".

Im sorry but seeing as how Delphi syntax reads as English I'm guessing the reason you're buttfucked is something else entirely. (and seeing as how you bashed the same thing on another thread)

I doubt you can even code but hey, you're entitled to your opinion. I suppose, by comparison, vb syntax seems to you...acceptable, right?

Also, I told you in the previous thread as well, stop thinking it's Delphi from 2000 when you barely had pubescent hair. Go read up on it's progression and where it is today then come back for a discussion, if you wish.
Thanks for the e-book OP.
Got finals coming up so will be a good thing to go through.

I had to code in Delphi 2007 and it was really horrible.. I like VB.NET because this was one of the first languages which I learned.. I'm now coding in my irl job in PHP and it's too much better, I can't even tell one bad thing about this job and I can imagine only two bad things about PHP, one is about charsets and second is about debugging..

The version you're talking about is pre 2008.

Precisely in 2008 Delphi (then CodeGear) was acquired by Embarcadero.
Since then it has gone through 14 editions, currently at 10.2.1 Tokyo.

It is native cross-platform, it's Rad Studio IDE makes it possible to release a project, the same project (code) to a variety of platforms. Android, mac, ios, Windows (32 & 64) as well as Linux (Linux being heavily developed right now)

There are thousands of ready made components out there supporting it that cuts down development time by at least a half, drastically reducing the need for you to write the code.

I feel I'd need to write a whole book to outline what has changed since D7, it's truly something else entirely. The problem is people associate it way too much with the old Delphi/years and get the impression it's outdated, when in fact it's a better choice in numerous areas than other, 'modern' programming languages. Ultimately, comparison is futile since this is an age old thing, similar to who came first, the chicken or the egg.

Also, you're post highlight personal experiences you've had and doesn't do it justice, since it's just your experience. Ideally you'd have to objectively provide arguments, comparisons, specific cases and so forth.

Why was it horrible? Did it have to do with the language at the time or were there other considerations involved? Similarly, vb.net syntax for example is universally agreed upon to be more troublesome than other languages's syntax, Delphi included.

You can't argue with why you like VB.NET, I'd like something I learned in school early on too, regardless of what anyone else says. Still, that doesn't make it better. I personally find it puzzling how you can love the vb.net syntax but hate the Delphi syntax, which is cleaner, plain old english. I suppose it has to do with personal preference and how your brain works, which is fine, obviously.

Similarly I can't understand one of your previous arguments, the one relating to the fact that you hate the fact that in Delphi you have to use begin and end, with code between them. I mean, good lord, you can't have it any simpler than that.

Code
begin
  ShowMessage('Hello World!');
end;

You begin and you end, what exactly is there to hate about it? How do 2 words make you hate something that much? I'd understand if it would be somewhat ambiguous or easily missed or so forth..but.. beats me at this point.

Good for you that you like PHP, however you do realize this isn't a discussion about PHP, right? Since you can't really compare Delphi/VB.NET with PHP.

They're roles/use, at least originally, are fundamentally different. Sure, I can wip up web development in Delphi in a heart beat using various things (IntraWeb, uniGUI and a lot others) - but you won't find me saying that it beats PHP when it comes to web development, it's just not comparable.

My point is, and has been all along, if you're that interested, go give it a try at where it is now, or if you want less effort just watch some videos/webinars on the matter and see for yourself where it is and where it's going. I guarantee you'll have a few jaw dropping moments.

Much respect gained, THATS ALL I CAN SAY!

May I add this 😁
