These aspects included within this guide are:

  • Runescape GUI and basics
  • Questing
  • Armour, weapons and combat
  • Moneymaking

Common Vocabulary within Runescape

Before commencing with the first aspects of the guide, Runescape has some key vocabulary that you may want to learn. These include:
  • PKing - Player Killing is a type of combat within the game, often within the Wilderness or PvP areas where players can fight other players and take their loot.
  • POH - Player Owned Houses are housing in which you can by from the real estate sellers within the game, these can come in handy throughout the game in many aspects.
  • RWT - Real World Trading is selling/buying in-game OSRS gold in exchange for a real-world currency.
  • Tick - A tick is 0.6 seconds within the game, all actions that require server processing are governed by this value, such as Combat, Skilling and others.
  • Wildy/Wilderness - An area within the game in which any player can kill you as they wish, along with taking your items if they succeed.
  • Botting - Using a 3rd party program to perform actions within the game, such as killing Mobs without having to do anything yourself.
  • PID - Player Identification

Runescape GUI and Basics

This GUI is the basic Runescape GUI in which you will use throughout your time within the game. Here's a quick overview of what things are:

Compass - Fairly self-explanatory. Allows you to traverse throughout the map and follow guides on where to go during quests and such.

Health Orb - Shows you your current health without having to switch to your skills tab, allows you to react to damage quicker by eating food.

Prayer Orb - Prayer is a vital key to the game for combat. This orb shows you your current prayer which can be recharged from either praying at an altar or through prayer potions.

Stamina Orb - Indicates your run energy, this can be improved by training the Agility skill. Can also be recharged by stamina/agility potions.

Stats - The area in which you can see your current stats within the game and see your current total level.

Quest List - The Quest List shows the player their current in-progress, completed or not started quests. Quests in yellow indicate in-progress, green indicates that the quest is completed and red indicates that the quest has not been started. Here you can also see the steps in which you need to take to complete a quest and quest points which are requirements for some quests such as Recipe for Disaster.

Prayer - The prayer interface displays all current prayers that you can use to aid you in combat. Important prayers include Protect from Melee, Ranged and Magic which block all attacks from the chosen attack style.

Spellbook - Displays all the spells that can be used by the player. Spells are unlocked by improving your magic level, spellbooks can also be changed to others such as the Lunar Spellbook or the Ancient Spellbook which give you additional spells used for combat and utility.

Questing

Quests are the main factor for beginners in OSRS. They give quest points, EXP for skills, items and requirements to wear certain items or venture into certain parts of the game. There are a total of 262 Quest Points awarded for all of the quests within the game along with 20 free and 116 member-only quests.

For the most efficient questing order after starting out - you should follow this order:

  1. The Restless Ghost    1QP - 9 Prayer given
  2. Imp Catcher              1QP - 8 Magic given
  3. Witch's Potion           1QP - 10 Magic given
  4. Client of Kourend       1QP - Rewards two EXP lamps with 500 EXP
  5. Waterfall Quest          1QP - 30 Attack and 30 Strength given
  6. Druidic Ritual              4QP - 3 Herbore given and Herblore unlocked
  7. Murder Mystery          3QP - 11 Crafting given
  8. Monk's Friend             1QP - 13 Woodcutting given

Armour, Weapons and Combat

Within Runescape, Combat is calculated by both Attack and Strength. In melee combat, strength determines the max hit of the attack along with any attributes of your armour whilst the accuracy of your hit is determined by your attack along with bonuses from your gear. For ranged combat, your ranged level determines your max hit along with the type of bow you use whilst accuracy is determined by which type of weapon you use. Finally, for magic combat, the max hit of a spell is determined by the spell itself and not the magic level, whilst magic level does determine the accuracy along with any Magic gear you may be wearing.

Combat Level within the game determines the strength of an NPC or Player compared to your combat, in OSRS, a player's max combat level is 126 and every player starts with a combat level of 3. It is typically calculated with this theorem for melee combat level (the Level which is shown by a user's name):
floor(0.25(Defence + Hits + floor(Prayer/2)) + 0.325(Attack + Strength))

To determine a player's combat level compared to yours, colours can be used to indicate how strong they are relative to you.

Green - Lower Combat Level
Yellow-ish - Slightly Lower Combat Level
Yellow - Equal Combat Level
Orange to Red - Higher combat level, from low to high in terms of orange > red.

Typically, NPCs will stop being aggressive towards your character as you reach double their combat level, except a few outliers such as any monster within the Wilderness, which will attack you regardless of Combat Level.

Defense as a skill doesn't contribute to the damage you take or deal, yet it increases the chance that the enemy will hit a 0 on you rather than reducing the damage they do per attack. Therefore, defense is for evading attacks and should not be levelled to minimise the attack damage of an enemy.

Money Methods

We've all been there, especially newbies starting out on the game, not knowing how to make any money and having 0gp to buy any food/armour. Here's a quick rundown on ways to make money for both P2P and F2P:

Beginners -

  1. Stronghold of Security - If you're a true newbie who's just started the game, running through Stronghold of Security will give you a solid 10k GP to start from.
  2. Flax Picking and Bow Stringing - No skills for methods? No problem. You can go to the Flax Fields by Seers' Village, picking around 1k an hour. From this, you can make bowstrings at Varrock castle for a solid 200k~ GP an hour with no skills needed. This is a pretty nice method for newbies to try out.
  3. Dark Wizards and Cowhides - Need to get some combat skills after getting out of the tutorial island? Killing cows at the Lumbridge farms can gain you a solid 40k GP an hour by tanning the cowhides at the same time.
  4. Iron ore - Mining is a key money-making skill in Runescape, especially when you reach Runite ore. At Al-Kharid mine you can net around 75k~ GP from mining iron ore per hour.

F2P -
  1. Telegrabbing Nature Runes - In the Wilderness, there's a small lava island that spawns 4 nature runes. This requires 33 Magic to do, though it will net you a solid 300-400K~ GP an hour, putting it at a high amount of GP for an F2P player.
  2. Making Anchovie Pizza - Need a more AFK method? Simply having 55 cooking allows you to make Anochive Pizza out of anchovies and a plain pizza. Selling these on the Grand Exchange can make you around 150k-200k~ GP per hour.
  3. Moulding Sapphire Rings - Requiring 20 Crafting, buying a bunch of gold and sapphires allows you to mould sapphire rings to make a decent 200k GP per hour. The most efficient method of this is at Al Kharid bank, due to the close furnace nearby.
  4. Telegrabbing Zamorak Wines - Got 33 Magic? Telegrabbing the Wine of Zamorak is a pretty nice AFK method which can net you anywhere from 50k-200k~ GP per hour just by clicking on the wines and hopping worlds.

P2P High Stats -
  1. Raids | Chambers of Xeric -
    What's needed?
    • 90+ Att/Def/Str/Mag/Range
    • 70+ Prayer
    • Friend(s) who have 55+ Farming | 78+ Herblore | 30+ Construction
  2. GP per Hour (avg):
    • 3.5m~ GP per Player
    • Chance of a Twisted Bow - 1B GP!
  3. Killing Zulrah -
    What's needed?
    • 70+ Defense
    • 75+ Ranged
    • 75+ Magic
    • 40+ Prayer
  4. GP per Hour (avg):
    • 2m~ GP (average of drops)
  5. Killing Cerberus -
    What's needed?
    • 91+ Slayer (MUST HAVE)
    • 85+ Str/Att/Def
    • 70+ Prayer
  6. GP per Hour (avg):
    • 2.5m~ GP (average of drops)

I don't see anything in here about how spinning flax into bowstring is the best way to maxing crafting.

Other than that it looks pretty good.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Opening eclectic implings to do medium clues is also fairly good money with low reqs.
I think 2.5m/hr on average (with all hidey holes and reqs)

Yeah, I used to do this, I might add some P2P Low-Reqs on the guide in a while.
This might be the coolest thing I've seen in this section. That's awesome.

I appreciate it :)
Just started getting back in to the game and this is quite a nice read :) thanks for this
This is actually one hell of a guide. Very simple and straightforward, newer members that have barely any Runescape knowledge should find this extremely helpful. Great job OP!

Hopefully, it will help some newbies out of getting some early stats :)

Yeah, I hope so too. I started off my OSRS account 3 days ago and have been questing a lot for stats. It's actually so much better than anything else when you start out so having those quests up in your guide is a great addition tbh. I currently have 98 quest points, took a break afking willows and now going to get back on the quest grind.
