Clover award: missing out due to character limit?

An idea popped in my head today while posting.

If a certain post did not meet the required 100 character count limit, their post would get skipped over and they would miss out on the award, correct?

If so, I had a suggestion:

Once the person makes the post and their post was the one selected for the award, but they didn't get it due to not having 100 characters, what if a pm gets sent to them saying something along the lines of "Your post would have received the Golden Clover award, but did not contain 100 characters". This would encourage users for more high quality posting in order to receive the award.

Trying to think of any negatives to this suggestion and can't really find any. Was thinking that it would upset users for not getting it but then again.. It would motivate them more and lead to high character count posts.

Opinions?

I think you just mad and want to eliminate the competition so you can get the clover awards lol

But this suggestion would make for more competition. ❓

I feel like something like this would just cause users to fill posts with nonsense to reach the hundred character minimum after being salty about not getting the most coveted clover.
I doubt the system runs a chance for every post but rather checks for char count first and uses that as a filter.
How do you even get the award? I thought Omni had to hand them out by hand?

You have a random chance to receive one of the three after making a post containing a hundred or greater characters.
if a user cares so much about a pixel they should probably take a vacation ban

Correct.

So to do as OP suggests would require me to do the chance first then a character check which imho is a waste. It's fine imho how it is now.
I mean I think it is fine the way it is, but maybe a second option that would not require much work on the HF end, do what many user scripts have. Instead of sending a PM, have a character counter and a notification if it qualifies or not for over 100 characters. I believe that could be done easily with JavaScript.

No need to flood PM's and emails saying the post is not long enough when a simple on the go notification would do.

There is already this add-on/plugin for FireFox/Chrome that will do just that and even more here.

[Update] HFX: Native Web Extension for Hack Forums [Chrome/Firefox]

The character counter in this add-on will even show you what clove you qualify for.
However it doesn't tell you if you will receive it or not.
That's just the luck of the draw.

Special thanks to xadamxk for this Add-on.

And no need to add a lot more javascript to the pages either.
