Host Linux VPS

Does anyone know anything about creating your own vps server?
Im interested in getting started in the business.
To be profitable, you need to buy your own hardware and colocate.

I did some google research but no luck, what type of hardware?

Normally just the server and drives. Most locations offer power backup.

If I am correct, you originally posted about this and it got deleted. Were you the one who posted about having old hardware you want to make into a new server? I made an extensive comment but it got removed before you saw it.

You asked if you could convert an old machine, install centos, and sell it as a VPS... Well at least at first you lied and said you had no money to afford one so you wanted to make one.

In short, yes it is possible to convert old equipment and make your own server. However, to do this and monetize it, you are a bit too bullish. You are not able to offer the services a true VPS hosting company can. 1. You do not have the performance capabilities to offer and 2. you do not have the network capabilities to offer.

When you are paying for a VPS, you are guaranteed performance standards, networking standards, paid support around the clock, cpanel access, etc. The major flaw in your plan (even if you sell someone on shitty hardware) is the fact you most likely have a residential ISP account. Soon as your ISP notices increased bandwidth and more process heavy functions, they will infer. ISPs are not stupid and do not want residential accounts running the processes of a commercial account. You also have none of the resources a proper company has when it comes to protecting the equipment from outside attacks.

Let's also consider, what if someone uses your servers maliciously (because the only person who would actually buy your host would be on a forum), regardless of the limited liability you set with your client, the cops will still be knocking at your door because you do not have the profiling information a proper hosting firm does. At which by that point, (if you are in the USA) I am sure you were not reporting your income to the IRS, I am sure you did not properly file as a business with the Department of State, etc. - you would just be opening a can of worms.

Doing this for personal use is one thing, commercial use is another.

What if i only use it only for me.
And when people do malicious activity with a vps how come they never get in trouble. is it the same for me if i had my own personal vps?

First, let me answer how criminals do not get caught: they are usually either purchasing hosts off of people like yourself who did not think through what they were really getting themselves into, or they are purchasing hosts out of the reach of a country's intelligence department, maybe they are using fake credentials, etc. It is like asking how do people get away with robbing a bank, they just do sometimes. It is usually the stupid ones that get caught.

As for you creating your own VPS. Again, it is very feasible for you to do it for yourself. The hardware will not perform as great as a paid solution (since you are using an old computer) but even if you purchased your own Dell Poweredge or a Lenovo blade server, you still need to have a great deal of understanding toward networking. Since you are doing it yourself, you will be starting fresh. There will be no cpanel or graphical user interface available. You will have to learn to adapt to console control, etc. There is also an extreme difference in what exactly you are hosting... you will set up the machine differently if you are hosting a website versus hosting files and creating a NAS.

I got into networking by purchasing my first Dell Poweredge 2850 off of ebay. It came with no hard drives and no ram. I learned about the hardware the hard way. Then after I got it to turn on, I had to learn how to set it up. Honestly, it is a great way to learn if you are dedicated and have some beans to spend. No one understands how hard it is to find a high capacity 80-pin SCSI drive until they purchase a cheap old server off of ebay ;P

There are no legal repercussions if you only use it yourself (I mean unless you are the one doing illegal shit with it). But you would be correct on the knowledge cuve - there is no better time to start learning then now though :)

You are right though, they are expensive. In most cases, you have to buy them for a set period i.e 12 months, too. I have stumbled upon this company before, https://www.[censored].com, and their $10 package looks pretty good. Let me know how they are if you end up buying from them.
I've used Digitalocean before. They're fairly cheap, but very, very, very strict on what you do with it. Aka no Bots, stress testing of course.

I... I don't think you understand how people don't get caught when using a VPS. If you're the only person using a VPS, in a colo, that's bought, registered, and assigned to you, you're going to get caught. There's literally no way for you NOT to get caught if you're running your own space inside of a colo.

Nah, I was just trying to drive a point home when I saw his answer. 👍
