Look into Electron. It's the next big thing right now. It's relatively easy to get into and a lot of current programs are coded in it. Skype, Discord, Visual Studio Code and Atom to just name a few.

Both are great, though mobile apps have been taking off these days and they are a great way to get yourself out there and develop accessible solutions for a wide community.
