So, I made a animated signature for a member here, and when he tried to upload it as his signature, it says that it needs to be 500 KB maximum. Don’t you think that is a pointless feature? Why can someone not post a signature no matter how big its size is? Can you get rid of this problem by getting a bigger upgrade or I don’t know?

Typically animated pictures are larger pictures anyways. My guess to why they don't is storage, and also most should be static anyways. You could decrease the size of the gif, or compress the gif.

No it is not pointless. We don't want pages to take forever to load. If you have the default number of posts per thread page (10) and each of those members has a 500KB signature then you are already at 5MB of data in signatures alone to load. Now imagine if it were more. You have to consider that we also are a mobile friendly site and not all internet connections are high speed.

The 500 KB size has been the default limit for a very long time, as others said it's due to the loading speed & making the forum as friendly as possible for mobile (data/no wifi) users. Which is very understandable.

You have to keep in mind that signature's can be nothing too crazy as a designer.

There's ways to reduce the file size, for example if you have a GIF and change the dither from 100 to 99 it already mostly takes away a few 100 KB.

If you have the default number of posts per thread page (10) and each of those members has a 500KB signature then you are already at 5MB of data in signatures alone to load. Now imagine if it were more. You have to consider that we also are a mobile friendly site and not all internet connections are high speed.

The signature is not crazy at all, tho it has 53 MB, but from other forums, what I’ve experienced was that they had either their own server to upload their signatures ( it was a limit ) OR upload it on imgur ( no limit )

Damn post hunting game so strong. Don't you think I know it's a problem? Think by yourself, can we all put a animated signature? No lol, for example I cannot. And there are lots of non-upgraded users that cannot add a animated signature. There won't be 10 replies per page that have animated signatures, anyway.

On the first page alone there's 5 signatures, which could all be 50MB, so I have to load 250MB into my browser? Even if 10 people had static images of 5MB, that's still 50 which is too much. What about one guy who makes his 100MB?

The current limit is just fine and I doubt will be increased any time soon.
