Buying a macbook

When buying a macbook (Pro or Air) , do I need a brand new one for it to last me for a while , or could i buy one off craigslist or something like that?

Brand new is obviously the safest option. You know what you're getting. It'll come with a limited warranty out of the box, covering your purchase for the first year. But that's not to say you shouldn't be pre-owned. Just know what you're buying, and make sure it's the right price. Don't pay close to retail for an eight year old MBP, for example.
