Riseup is a collective that offers a free, secure(ish) email, VPN and XMPP service that relies on a total of 0 ads for revenue.
I added the parentheses because they're based in the US. And everyone knows that none of the data hosted on servers that are based in the US is truly secure. But with some extra security measures, you can be reasonably secure using the service.
Use PGP encryption when using the email service for any possible black hat activities, and use OTR encryption for the XMPP end of things.
The catch: you need to be invited in order to sign up.
That's where I come in, of course. Leave a comment on the thread and I'll PM you your very own invite.
RISEUP RED ACCOUNTS
Red accounts are what give you access to the email service, the XMPP service and it is the only way to access the Riseup VPN on Windows.
You can access the email service via web browser, or through an email client of your choice on PC or mobile.
PGP encryption is extremely beginner friendly. Don't be intimidated.
My personal set up, to this day, is nothing special.
PC (Windows) = OpenVPN + Thunderbird + Enigmail
Mobile (Android)= Bitmask + K-9 Mail + OpenKeychain
You can access the VPN on Windows using OpenVPN. You download 2 files, move 1 of them to the OpenVPN folder and the other into a specified directory within the OpenVPN folder.
It's also available for Mac OS and Linux, but I have less experience setting it up using those systems. You can follow the guide(s) that are provided on the Riseup website.
You can even get it to work on Android with a bit of set up, but it's much easier to use the Bitmask app. That will be covered in the next section.
RISEUP BLACK ACCOUNTS
Let me start off by saying that Black accounts have been rendered practically useless.
Once upon a time, signing up for a Black account would get you access to the Riseup VPN through the Bitmask app. These accounts were strictly for accessing the VPN through Bitmask, and no invite code was required in order to sign up. Today, however, you don't need an account to access it. Bitmask offers an anonymous connection to the Riseup VPN in the app menus, rendering the Riseup Black accounts practically useless.
The app is available for Android, Mac OS and Linux. The Windows release has been "coming soon" since 2017. I've stopped holding my breath. You can start using the Riseup VPN right now. No sign up required. Just go download Bitmask for your platform.
I think that just about sums it up.
Now, get out there and make Mr. Snowden proud.
