The old account was inactive for 7 years next month so I had it bookmarked and would check it.

Years ago we had a database user table breach.  I forced a lot of password changes but there was still issues with the accounts getting stolen because of the email exposed.  There was also problems with inactive members deciding to sell their accounts to scammers.  So I started closing inactive accounts regularly.  If you didn't log onto HF in a year you were closed.  Eventually this led to 300k closed accounts.  

Oh, I also close accounts of members who violate site policy.  But that's not the bulk of the 300k.  I probably close 1-2k members each year.

Zero post members get pruned already.  

Now with GDPR I'll prune inactive accounts too.


HF has had 4.2 million members join and we have about 1000 members join each day.  But not all of them are active. Lots join to read threads or just make a few posts and never come back.  It's a waste of resources having millions of members in the users table.  It can actually slow the site down.
