I have a friend, this individual is a really cool dude and highly intelligent. He has been my friend for a long time but as we are pretty much full blown adults now I have come to the realization that at this point in his life he is a hardcore but high functioning alcoholic. He had somewhat recently kicked a more serious drug addiction by himself. I don't think he can see that he is an alcoholic but I could see it today quite clearly. I know other people see it.
I really don't think I can be the one to tell him that he is an alcoholic in any meaningful way that could create a positive change in him. That is just our relationship. I feel like I shouldn't be the one responsible for him and his life as he is obviously his own person.
He drives drunk, frequently. Imo he is long overdue for a DUI. I think he is starting to get worse. I know this sounds really stupid but he is so high functioning that he is perfectly normal 4-5 beers deep. His driving is not affected enough to get pulled over or cause issue. I know drunk driving is terrible and he is endangering lives but I really have no say in the matter. I am not his boss all I can do is talk to him about it, which I have.
However, I feel like he might be starting to get worse. I don't really know what to do.
Being perfectly normal 4-5 beers deep isn't that strange to be honest. I myself am perfectly normal after around 600ml of liquid consisting of 200ml of vodka and any soft you can think about (it being energy drink or sprite).
The issue is more about drunk driving, and that's the real issue. Your mate can have the relation he wants with alcohol, but risking other people's life because of it isn't nice at all.

When you spoke to him about it, what did he say or how did he react? Did he brush it off? At the end of the day, you can't force someone to change who isn't willing to change themselves but expressing your concern for his well being is definitely a good first step.
If you are struggling and need someone to talk to about something or want to vent about your IRL problems, I am just one PM away.

Yeah you are right but he doesn't just stop at 4 or 5 drinks.

I actually mentioned it to him and he seemed appreciative that I was lookin out. Still, I can't know if it will change anything.

Have you suggested anything like having him check out an "Alcoholics Anonymous" meeting? Sounds like he is in denial which is a huge step in alcoholism/addiction.

Peak Lounge Graveyard - RIP: futana, trisomy 21, clark, grin
DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS MEMBER
He isn't an alcoholic he's a normal ass dude.
in your early 20s you drink. It's the way it goes.
4-5 beers isn't a lot. When I was drinking I'd drink anywhere between 6 and 12 a night during the week and more than that on weekends.
It's the party phase of your life. Loosen up and have some fun
Also everyone drink drives.
Do the right thing and refer him to the nearest rehabilitation center.

There's really not much to do sadly, maybe go drink with him like a beer or 2 and when he wants to go somewhere drive for him.
2 of my friends can smash a 18 pack and think they are good to drive, scary shit dude.
Or just deliver em beer, that way they don't got to drive to get more etc.

I mean I wouldn't drive after 5 beers bro and you are retarded if you do at any weight.
He drinks more like 6-12 every time I see him. To do that every day and to drive is not normal at all.
inb4 all the experienced kids who think they can drink 10 beers whenever they want and be perfectly sober.
5 beers is a 1.14 BAC at 140lbs so yeah, to literally be over a 1.0 all the time and that is normal is alcoholic status.
Keep in mind I don't know how many he drinks but I have seen him drink an entire bottle of wine and he seemed only slightly drunk.

Dude I would rather have drug charges any day of the week rather than a DUI.
Alcohol is literally the thing officers are most trained to see and deal with. It is super risky and DUIs cost over 10 grand in my state.
