[Suggestion][Idea] Hear me out, not sure if development suggestions are allowed.

So I'll start out my introducing myself, I'm a full stack web developer for almost 2 years now working for a Company and I had a refactoring idea.

I'm not selling myself or anything like that.

How about we refactor hackforums to Laravel 6 api + Vuejs 2.0 Frontend with Vue router + Vuex for state management.

Design and all will be the same as the one now. I'm pretty sure the current stack uses a lot of Javascript Sprinkling on top of PHP. I may be wrong. I might be stubborn to suggest this refactor.

Why Laravel + VueJS? I'm not saying Laravel is fast or anything like that but tne entire project (HF) becomes easily manageable with ACL + Social Auth + Web Auth and digital ecommerce upgrades including awards, gifts, etc.

Thread management becomes easier, Asynchronous/Await, Promises, Maps, Iterators, Arrow functions and other ES6 features are easily available since Vue. Thanks to webpack lol

I mean it can also be Laravel + React. I'm not saying that current stack has any issues even scaleability. I have no idea about how the admins manage the code if they're managing code at all. Or is it like a one man army? Anyways I have my respect for the work done towards this site and amount of time and money invested. Hats off. 🤝
That is a lot of unnecessary work for a forum where the two developers have several years-decade+ experience in the current system and are currently learning some new things with the implementation of Conversations and other things.
That's all nice and fluffy but why do that? You haven't named a single reason why. 🤣

New technologies? You don't always benefit from new technologies. It all depends on a purpose of what you're doing. "Old ones" can still work perfectly if dev that does them knows what (s)he's doing. In 2019, you have more than 80% of websites written in PHP despite all new things and make it easier tech blabla. You're suggesting newest frameworks and libraries for JS but plain "old" works fine, too. Also, implementing features of ES6 can give compatibility issues to certain IE users (depending on the version of their IE/Edge).

Don't look at this as some personal attack or something, I just wanted to point out there isn't any benefit of changing something that's regularly updated and working properly as of now.

It was a blast being on staff. I stepped down as it's time for me to move on. I wish you all the best and if you were hit by my warnings and/or bans, it was nothing personal.

Peace out!
What's that old saying.. "If it's not broken, don't fix it!"
On the other side of things, OP actually put effort into his suggestion. Props to you.

That's why according to him
You willing to do all the work of conversion for us for free?

Sounds like about 1000 hours of development time to convert this entire site and all functions. In the end the goal would be to make HF function exactly how it is right now. Do you know how expensive it would be for me to do this? It would also cease all other development.

I'd love to be Laravel and React at this point in the game. But we have 12 years of code done on this site. It sounds like a nearly impossible task what you're suggesting.

Much of the new features we're working into the site will very likely be NodeJS+React and using WebSockets. We installed Social AUTH into the site in 2 days basically. Our digital commerce system works perfectly fine as-is.

I'm not sure thread management would actually become easier. It would just be different. We have no real problems with our database and going nosql sounds nice but we don't really need it. Our site speed is pretty good for all the content we serve. We audit regularly.

If I was going to do anything which this much scope I would simply create a native app that would plug into our database to deliver the content. That's the more logical choice imho for development roadmap.

Basically much of Convo doesn't even touch the PHP other than front end delivery which could be HTML pages if it wasn't for how MyBB templating system works.

I understand the suggestion for us to update our backend technology but it really doesn't alter the end-user experience by doing so and our development management has been just fine. We're busting out features constantly.

That's fine. I'm not using i'd do it alone, that sounds lot of work and time which I can't spare.
There can be a team though, and a private gitlab ci/cd setup and you having access just in case you want to see the progress. Nothing serious, just a mere git repo it seems.

Anyways I very well agree with you and to your question weather thread management becoming easier, yes it does. Depends on how well you do state management. And I might not do it for free but at the same time there'd be no serious involvement of yours required to a point where we actually want the data. Originally we can start with dummy seeds for testing. But meh, I'm not sure weather you'll say yes.

You can look at it as an unnecessary work, for me personally I can see as expanding my already gained knowledge from web development

The transition from Web 2.0 to 3.0 is real and it's happening, thanks to NodeJS for making Javascript a rich slut by taking it out of V8 lol.

Jokes aside, why do you see this as unnecessary? Sounds tedious work, yes but unnecessary?

Hmm interesting, I really have no answer to why. But adapting to new technologies might not always help out in some cases, but ES6 is game changer let's face it. It might not be that great in the coming years, but NodeJS really did change the face of web development entirely even for Desktop and Mobile apps.
React, Ionic, Vue native, ElectronJS
It's penetrated everywhere, why not HF?
React - Facebook
ng2+ - Google
There's a lot of community support when it comes for help.

If you're concerned about How does this help the community then you need a broader vision tbh. Cause it most certainly will and a development branch can speak for itself.

You're right but we gotta adapt to the change sooner or later. We can't be stuck

I'm sorry im not trying to be a narcissist, but I can dedicate solid 3-4 hours for this cause.

And yeah we can't disagree with the fact that Web 3.0 is powerful if utilized correctly, it offers even PWA, imagine browsing HF offline? Idk if PWA can fully be applied here but just my 2 cents.
Ugh, this guy is clueless. Another one of these smart people that doesn't know what he doesn't know.

Sorry bro but you might know about Web 3.0 but I know about HF. You are making unrealistic suggestions. Very unrealistic. It's like asking us to build a rocket to the moon. No one with the necessary skills is going to do what you're asking for free. I couldn't even afford to do it anyway. There is zero benefit other than saying, "Hey, HF runs web 3.0 now" which is silly anyways.

We have so much custom code on this site.

How about 3-4 hours per day for a year? That's how long it wouild take at least.

I can't help but think you're an a-hole for suggesting this then not recognizing by my reply that my answer is NO. I was polite about, maybe that was my problem. You're an idiot, we are not recoding HF. Seems more clear now don't it?

You're a child. Xerotic and I together have DECADES of experience. And not just as "fudge pack web developers" but as actual webmasters.

Idiot, we don't manage the code. We just write it and execute. That's all we need to do. This is not Facebook with 400 full-time developers. We're just a couple guys who code projects specifically for HF.

You arrogant jerk. You just joined and you have suggestions about rebuilding HF. What an A-Hole you really are. You probably thought you sounded smart with your suggestion. Actually the opposite. You sound like a moron.

The whole idea sounds stupid and I don't know much about web dev either.

Why rewrite HF when it works optimally just the way it is?
The fact you took so much time of your day to think of and write this suggestion, makes me question your sanity. You made 2 valid points thus far, the rest were irrelevant or just completely false.

Either you are brand new to web development and just finished your first webinar on Web 3.0 or you are just a very confused, inexperienced web developer.

A good developer knows when to utilize things and not to, what is necessary and unnecessary.

Quote of the year.
You know when you listen to a song so good that you listen to it every day for a week and then grow tired of it because you have literally killed it. That’s what I’m gonna do with this fucking quote.
Some ideas just need to stay ideas and should not be made public. 🤝

I will admit that HF's speed is incredibly fast especially for just how many features it carries on a day to day basis. All the posts, threads, users, second by second page loads, the Hack Game, Contracts, the new profiles, etc.. are fast as can be also especially when compared to other forums/sites that are very basic in terms of comparison to HF.

And yes, the features you guys are releasing are genuinely coming out constantly as of late, which is amazing. HF is one of the first sites I've seen where every feature rolled out has been a positive one and also very fun to use. Many sites try implementing games, gambling systems, maybe even marketplace systems as well, however HF's implementation of all those has been far supreme to any others. I mean seeing just how many people love playing the Hack Game alone, and how detailed the "strategy threads" they make are, just shows how great these features really are at the end of the day.

I've always loved the layout of HF, how it works, just everything in general. After all these years I don't think I could get used to another forum as much as I am to HF, and I've heard many times from friends that "HF is confusing at first" that's just genuinely because this site has so much to offer to a very wide variety of people.

If what you've been using for the past 12~ years works great, then why fix it as others have said. I'm always open to new changes for HF of course as the internet is a monumentally fast growing place so it only makes sense for HF to keep up in certain aspects, and with the recent updates alone I think we've done that and more. Not to mention as you said it could be 1000 hours of work for the change alone, why spend the time and money on something like that if what you have now works great.

Long Live HF

This post completely reminds me of that one quote

Quote:Don't fix things that aren't broken

The time spent "fixing" something that isn't broken could have been used towards something more useful.

That's exactly what I think of when reading this thread.
