Can't remove/disable banner image?

Although you can change your banner image you cannot completely remove or disable it if you have enabled one.

Is there any way to do this?

Are you talking about your user group? Like L33t, Ub3r, etc? [Image: ub3r.png] <-- This?

If so, you need to belong to at least one usergroup. When you upgrade to l33t, you are removed from the normal user usergroup, and added to l33t, you can not rejoin the normal user usergroup. When you upgrade to ub3r, you are removed from the l33t usergroup and added to ub3r usergroup, you can not regain access to the l33t usergroup. The only way to not have a userbar is to not upgrade your account.
OP was not talking about this.

I'm talking about the new profile banner images. You can configure one here: https://hackforums.net/usercp.php?action=changebanner

If you add a banner image there is no obvious way to remove or disable it, if at all possible.

You can't fully disabled. However, you should be able to remove the one you uploaded by clicking on the "Remove Banner" here:
