Hello,
I'm working on a licensing system!
The licensing system will (when completed) feature an auto-setup/buy setups, revocable and highly customizable licensing.
Just something I want to do for fun, I know many other competitors exist.
The question I have regards the model of selling the system to clients:
-One model would be purchasing a subscription to receive a software license to my system, then you would host the system on your own hardware. This means I generally wouldn't care about the amount of users, and restrictions would be limited (buy access, and get it all). A hosted option would probably exist utilizing VMs, but that isn't the primary concern. This would require me to be responsible for the software, and general support. However, the customer will be responsible for the hosting.
Pros/Cons that I see with this model:
+ Allows me to focus on a limited scope
+ Allows me to have an incentive to provide excellent software
+ All data stays in the hand's of my clients
+ Simple model, purchase software, receive software
- All the data stays in the hand's of my clients -I know generally what I'm doing when it comes to securing my services, but not everyone does. The software will be as secure as I can manage, but I will have no control of the environment)
- Harder setup for clients (should be as simple as a WHMCS install)
- Updates/improvements require clients to manually upgrade
- Risk of piracy (I utilize Ion-cube, with Dynamic Keys)
- Limited scope of marketing, likely targeted towards bulk licensing clients
-The other model would be what most sellers utilize, you purchase access to the online cloud based licensing service, and issues licenses. I would be required to handle everything but implementation into client's software.
+ I can push instant patches/upgrades
+ Little-to-no risk of piracy
+ Allows me to ensure the safety of all customer and client data
+ Likely more complex modeling, purchase quantified access to the service
+ Easy setup (follow tutorial)
+ Increased scope of marketing, likely targeted towards all consumers- big and small
- All data is in my hands, I hold full liability
- Increase scope, providing more services overall
This is where I ask: Does anyone have any interest in a self-hosted licensing system? A system that you fully control and manage, but where all the software is ran locally, and no data leaves your control?
