How to build a simple scraper in vb.net

(Dec 2, 2019 01:43 PM)MavenGradle Wrote:  If this tutorial was indeed intended for beginners you should have used a proper naming convention. Right now it looks like you can't even properly name your methods consistently, whereas this is for beginners, right? It seems like you can't even get the basics right.

Then again, reading this thread I'm pretty sure you got the shitty method name from Eternal Darkness which is great. Someone that's offering advice that contains a naming convention that is more in line of Java programming instead of C#. Absolutely wonderful (sarcasm, by the way).

Not to mention the fact that you have absolutely zeroerror handling in your code at all. Might I also recommend looking into HttpWebRequests for more fine-tuned control?
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/...mework-4.8

Now, I'm sure you mean well but before you bash others because of a clear inability to take constructive criticism, keep in mind that your response to all this speaks volumes about your own ability to comprehend the basics of general programming. This is not at all about bringing people down but more about your attitude towards people who are trying to help YOU by improving your practices.

Right, and what exactly is wrong with pointing out flawed logic so people understand why they shouldn't use a specific tutorial for learning purposes because the tutorial itself is flawed? Anyway, 0x doesn't have to show up at all to point those things out.

No one here is condemning anyone. People take criticism way to close to the heart which is why so many people are wrongfully becoming aggressive in this thread. There's nothing wrong with pointing out flaws and if it bothers people that they're being corrected, they should seriously reconsider their life choices and perhaps start sharing code that actually holds up to general coding standards, especially when it comes to tutorials which are intended to help out beginners.

All I see is beginners, who will instead be condemned for learning it's OK to use and implement bad practices and later on lose businesses millions of dollars because of a clear ineptitude of implementing basicerror handling. This is all just very generalized anyway, but hopefully this post contains enough information to stop this nonsense.

bro, your response is straight up longer than the original thread and I'm not going to do you the curtsy of reading it.  Your opinion straight up doesn't matter.

it's 20 lines of code, get over it.

Also you can eat that -3 for being a fkin muppit on my thread.

Too bad. Oh well, some people actually try their best to offer advice but if it falls on deaf ears I see no reason to assist in any other way. Regardless, you should fix your code because it reflects extremely poor on you and your childish behaviour.

when you start making more money than I do you can start telling me what to do 🤝

Honestly if I was a manager in a company and you were my employee and I saw you teaching this to potential future programmers, I would fire you for complete incompetence. I don't see how you having a job is relevant to this discussion at all. We all have jobs, join the club. Quite the achievement in life 🤦‍♂ . You're being called out for implementing extremely awful bad practices in a tutorial that is meant for beginners. You either deal with it and solve your code or look like someone who doesn't understand the basics of programming. Guess what you look like?

lmao I would never work for someone let alone you.  As I stated previously these "incorrect" practices that you keep stating have made me more money in a single transaction than you probably have made throughout your entire life. The whole point of posting this thread is to get people excited about programming.  You might be able to code a program as efficient as possible but you're absolutely worthless without an idea.  That goes for the opposite side of the spectrum too, You can have all the ideas in the world but if you don't know how to program or where to start, you're dead in the water.

People like you nitpick and pretend like you know the answers to pump your ego up when in reality you're hurting people who just want to learn and find an answer.  Can you kindly just stop responding to my thread already, because people like you absolutely disgust me and I have nothing more to say to you.

I've proven my point, to which you fail to respond. I was hoping to at least get one response that has some thought put into it but it appears like you're incapable of even that. Instead you go drifting off about money and a myriad of things that have nothing to do with the code you posted at all. Such a shame from someone who makes that much money 🤦‍♂

Regardless, any future threads that you may or may not post will be under the same looking glass and if you don't want people to comment on your bad practices, please refrain from posting low quality code.

like I said, make more money first then come talk to me you filthy mutt.
I'm barely reading what you say because that's how little respect I have for you.  That's the real reason why I'm not responding.

You are actually responding though. If you weren't responding, my notifications wouldn't be showing your name every time you do. Regardless off your flawed logic, I'll leave you and your incredibly weak responses to it. I have better things to do than to try and speak common sense to someone without the brains to offer an actual response to criticism.

That's right boy go back to work. I'm enjoying the free bytes/bumps so feel free to respond as much as you want  🤝

Remember when people could post tutorials in the .net section without getting crapped on because their code wasn't 100% efficient and perfectly written? Been a while. Thanks for sharing. People are afraid to post anything in .NET anymore from what I've noticed because they constantly get hammered by "1337 programmers" who say everything they coded is wrong or inefficient or not up to their standard.

It's one thing to provide constructive criticism with tact/simple manners or offer some advice. It's another thing to act like a coding god who knows the right way to code everything in a programming language. Wish more people would just appreciate the time people take to try and be helpful or write tutorials even if they're not perfect, it's better than solely replying to bitch about someones code.

There's nothing wrong with being wrong or being corrected by someone. People here have a hard time accepting they are wrong. I think the advice given here was very constructive instead of destructive. A simple "Thanks for the advice" or "Oh yea you are right my bad" goes a long way. Or if you are not agreeing with the person making a statement, starting a dialog can be really useful. Instead OP decided to go a completely different route, that was everything but productive. I don't even know why Who Soup even brought up the money factor, as if that is a proper measure for skill level. If anything, it shows immaturity.

You're in a coding community, what else did you expect than comments about the code you're posting?

Nah bro, death to a coward and a traitor that's just in my nature

A coward would not stand up to you, nor have I betrayed you by explaining that you clearly do not understand what the lines of code do when you call this a "Tutorial".

A tutorial should detail the correct way to code something, this does not. I was articulating that nicely previously (areas of improvement/constructive criticism).

You have some type of ego problem Who, not sure if you are too inexperienced dealing with actual human beings of if you have some type of Holier-than-thou complex (apparently advise for a "tutorial" became an "attack" in a single post?). My advise: seek help my dude, all I was trying to do was help you/reader to code better, and you started flaming the sh*t outta anyone who posted here.

This is defiantly a case of you being Trump: for those that have a different opinion then "he 'attacked' me" sort of maneuver... Amazing how many other "high-quality programmers" cannot see that my suggestions were not "an attack", merely suggestions.

Wish this forum was moderated still, so your thread could be closed/deleted to just stop stirring up drama. I never "attacked you", you need to get some thicker skin and be able to take very light criticism, this world, especially HF, is not a nice and accepting safe space kidd-o (account age + in-ability to read + personal attacks rather than "counter points")... (Feel free to say you have now for the first time "been attacked", you thin skinned uppity lil sh*t, I have yet to neg rep you or any retaliation for all your whining/"your attack" on my rep). #NotMyInternetPointsPlzImSoScared
I post my opinions, please try not to be offended... I am not saying I am superior, but my interpretation of what you are saying may be befuddling.

As for the rest of you, if you are going to call people "kid" then don't be a dick to them. Being a dick to children is uncool.

This is by far the best post in the thread. You all should read it and think about it.
