How would I test a freelancers WPF / MVVM abilities?

I’m trying to hire someone for a project of mine. I’ve posted on freelancer.com but I’m not sure if many of these Indians replying even know what they’re doing. One of them gave me a really vague explanation of what mvvm was in his “hire me” description.

Anyone know how I could vet these freelancers and know whether they really know MVVM or are just gonna produce some sloppy stuff that works, but isn’t well coded.

Thanks!

Best,
Draxyee
I think you shouldve prepare first your criteria for a quality software before looking on someone who can do work for you, if you just decided randomly you want these language that have a certain design pattern that you dont have any clue, then how can you evaluate it??

unless you just want the end result to work then you dont need any criteria for that

The question is not that.

I specified in my criteria that a dev must have MVVM experience.

The question is how do I test that

If you have criteria then you should know those criteria for you to judge his work, right? like you cant just put criteria without knowing what that means

in other word, you should know mvvm enough for you to review his works

Well I don’t, so the question is how would I test it, not knowing MVVM

MVVM is mostly WPF

Usually the project sources has Model classes like that :

As stated above, you need to know what is MVVM to check if the project has MVVM

You need to know what color is red to check if a paint has red color ...
Assert failure(PID 10704 [0x000029d0], Thread: 10960 [0x2ad0]): pBuffer != NULL
First rule of a high quality software: do not let it be coded by indians.
Second rule of a high quality software: make it a good deal for actually good freelancers. Nobody is going to code a big project for $50. Indians are exception.

This is why I fucking hate HF.

Mate, for fucks sake, I know the principles of MVVM.

1) If you're recommending checking their project structure, i'm clearly not going to pay them first and take that gamble.
2) Simply by having a couple folder doen't mean they are good at MVVM and they will use good principles.
3) I'm looking for tips and tricks, interview questions etc.

This cancer culture on HF where people make it impossible for the person asking a question to get a decent answer without powering through huge coding ego's, people who try and make you look stupid, people who're looking to increase post count, people who wanna show off their coding skills but say some dumb answer etc needs to go man, years its been like this.

Thanks, but I'm taking the goldmining approach. I'm looking for a clever indian who has his shit together (finding gold), because I cannot pay a normal wage, it's simply impossible having my budget.

I found one for javascript, now I need one for WPF.

I clearly given the point to you, that is to know the mvvm, then you already knew the structure what else do you want to know?? maybe youre looking for a quality software overall and not just simply the mvvm, theres more aspect to a quality software rather than simple following mvvm pattern

i said it because you agreed on the xheaven post that doesnt answer anything about mvvm, he only answer what you should look for if youre hiring a programmer
MVVM is not just about the folder structure but its a design architecture, simply "Separation of concerns",  its not just right to check if they know much of MVVM or not, its better to know how they code actually, like : are they follow "S.O.L.I.D" principles or not ? do they write clean code ? which other design pattern they use along such Repository Pattern Or CQRS ? are they use pure MVVM or they use frameworks? ...
if you just want a program that follows MVVM architecture then maybe most of these are not required but if you want high quality MVVM then one must knows these actually.

This is literally what I've been saying if you read the thread.

We here try to help but you're so restricted to your standards, the questions I provided are enough to make sure if someone knows much of MVVM and things related to it as standards of MVVM, everything other than that becomes more like a code smell, these are the only ways to check without seeing the code they provide, otherwise your only choice will be seeing an example of what they are doing or maybe a free open source they did in past.

Best Regards.

You simply can't just hire someone, ask him some bullshit questions, and make a deal. This is not how it works. Here, at my workplace, when I'm interviewing people, I personally ask them some of the following questions:
- for how long they code
- do they follow any coding standards
- do they use any kind of framework
- what IDE are they using for coding (even though its personal preference, it's pretty important not to code in NP++)

... and whatever else. However, this is only about 10%, I can't do anything much with the answers, so I just sit down with the guy, and tell him to make a simple project. At that point, I can see the following:
- setup (IDE, used framework if any)
- coding speed
- coding standards
- if struggling with something
- logical flaws
- coding flaws
... and a lot more.

Most of the time Indians will answer your questions like they know everything from A to Z, but when you see their code after hired them, you want to hang yourself. Respect to the few exceptions.

If your budget is low, prepare yourself to get a sh#t code, OR try to get a promising student to do the job, as they don't ask for that much money as a real-world programmer would do, but (mostly) they can produce some actually good code.

At this point, no questions will work, you can ask me anything, and I can answer anything, even copy-paste something from the internet, and then in the end you will be horrified from my code. Indians are pretty much a Russian-roulette.
