So I found this article that says that mentalists practice the same social engineering methods that hackers practice. I can't post links yet but google "How to Legally Practice Social Engineering" by Tim O'Connor.
Does this article sound legitimate or is it a scam?
Will learning mentalism help me learn social engineering?

Hey-
I just checked it out and it seems pretty legit but if they ask you to buy anything just deny (unless you really want).

No idea the article you’re on about, but the concept can be applied to social engineering. As it’s basically just tricking people

They never asked me to buy but I look it up and there are occasional articles if you keep searching that talk about professional hackers using mentalism, including besides the one I mentioned.
So would you say its worth it to learn mentalism on the side while learning penetration testing in order to assist in social engineering pentesting? There are a lot of good books to start with and I am planning on getting a Kindle just for this and for reading in general.

I would keep looking for more appealing social engineering websites. Maybe try some deeper (not illegal but yn) sites.

By learning MENTALISM you will learn magic tricks.
It is like "mind reading magic tricks" - actually you can not read the mind of anyone but looking from the spectators point of view it looks like you read the mind.
It doesn't means that you read the mind of a person if you reveal a selected card from any "pick a card trick" like this: because you just blink when I said black it means that your card is BLACK, now that you smile it is SPADE... oh I see a little light in your left eye, that means that your card has a low value... count slowly from 1 to 10 - yes you made a pause when you said 3 .. so your card is 3 of spade.

The other articles are on other sites just to clarify.

The article didn’t say to buy anything tho it did recommend a list of books from various authors.
I’m pretty certain the guy who wrote the article wasn’t selling anything himself tho.

What are some deeper sites that aren’t illegal. Most social engineering forums are to discuss illegal activity.

"Mentalists" are just after your money, all in all it's literally just that, social engineering. Don't know about that article tho but don't buy what ever bs they try to sell.

My only thing is all the books recommended aren’t sold by the person or organization that wrote/published the article. So it doesn’t look like they are selling me anything.
Then again, it could be an industry thing to get me to purchase more mentalism books.
Looks kinda legit, but you should remember that they are just for your money.
Mentalists take it a step further. Their attention to detail, and ability to piece together things is nothing short of amazing. Patrick Jane is one of my favorite TV characters.
