This is nothing weird or odd. As an investor, you sometimes come across the opportunity to purchase coins or tokens before they are placed on an exchange platform. These pre-public sales are also sometimes called ICO's:

The creators could have made a deal with the exchange platform. The creators could have made a deal with a marketing agency to 'stabilize' prices or 'distribute' coins 'equally' which is never a great sign when it comes to trust.
