They are used for a handful of different things.

1. Bumping threads.
   
2. Gambling in various ways such as flipping, scratchcards, sportsbook, blackjack and slots.
   
3. Investing in the crypto game essentially the same way you'd invest real money into crypto. 1 byte is the equivalent of 1 dollar in the game.
   
4. Trying to win hackuman egg lottos and just generally playing hackuman as a handful of things within it cost bytes.
   

There are a few other things you can do with bytes too, but assuming I'm not forgetting anything than those are the main and or most popular things to do with them
