I speak just enough to get by. My wife is from Peru, and we go down there just about every year (been less lately, due to the pandemic). So naturally she's a native speaker. But I can get by with telling taxi drivers where I need to go, ordering food, asking for directions, etc. And I understand conversations a whole lot more than I can participate.

We go to Lima every time, as it's where we have a house and where a lot of her family is. But the rest are a little outside of Cusco. So we go into the highlands once in a while. I've been to Arequipa- had family there for a little. I honestly preferred Arequipa over Lima. Little to like about Lima... it's loud and everything is gray.

I took Spanish classes in high school which were just the basics. I would definitely not be able to communicate fluently in the language. However, I do feel like I might be able to understand some conversations as I can pick up on some more important words.
