I'm trying to learn basics of reverse engineering which program/software should I choose. (I'd rather stick to open source/free software)

Reverse Engineering by Dennis Yurichev is how I got started learning. I experimented with IDA at first, but you don't have to go hard into investing in a tool like that if you don't work for a company that has access to licenses.
https://beginners.re/ The book is solid and a great intro to the basics. And it's free. There are PDF versions on the web if you know where to look or are willing to become a patron of D. Yurichev. Malware Dev & Grey Hat available for contract work. DM if you need me.

Yeah, I've been around a while

For software, I have never used Ghidra since I am old AF and there is no thing such as Ghidra from the early 2010s, the only tools I use mostly are HxD (for dynamic analysis [reading binary files]), PE File Explorer (to learn what language or tech stack was used on the binary), OllyDbg (for static analysis [running process]) and IDA Pro (to dive deeper). Also don't forget to put everything inside a VM (virtual machine) to not damage your host machine (main machine). The rest are history my friend. 🙃 |
