Title says it all. I was wondering if how long have you guys been using Linux as your main operating system without switching back to Windows or any other operating system. And why? Do you guys mind sharing your flavors and why you pick this distro? 🙃
How long you guys been using Linux as main os? |

Windows is going to be a need for me until I stop working. Linux distros simply don't support the required business software and likely never will. DirectX support is still bad and Wine is not sufficient. Lack of native support for common codecs and image formats is also a problem. The final nail in the coffin was Red Hat telling us they won't be working with Intel to support one of their newer compilers.

Most of work needs specific software that jut won't work right on Linux. I tried it in the past, and I ended up needing two computers, then just got tired of switching back and fort. I long for the day Linux is at that point, but where we're at right now, it's just not sustainable for many people.

We are on the same boat when it comes to work related matters as customers and clients would and will always prefer to use Windows over something advance and superior. Lol. Just kidding. But yeah, even if you use Wine, its still not enough especially if you are dealing with applications written for Windows that require high demand resources which would in turn kill Wine instantly. Been there and have done that. 😆 (Jun 9, 2024 10:43 AM)Loaded Lux Wrote: I primarily use Linux for server-side tasks, but for everyday use, I'm fine with using Windows for my day to day task. Another friend who does the same thing. I primarily use Linux on my home servers but if I am on the go then either Windows or MacOS since I have both. Especially the time that fuck this I am going to quit gaming, I am switching to Windows then after a few months and school came, I badly need to switch to Windows because school needs me this and that, and I need to save time from the hassles. 😆 And in the end, I go back to Windows then the re-installation of games begin and self-discipline is instantly gone. 🙃 (Jun 9, 2024 11:27 AM)Aeowulf Wrote: I'm with this. But if its all about servers then I go to Linux. 🙃 (Jun 9, 2024 03:59 PM)Betty Blue Wrote: Since I started using computers probably, 10-15 years I'd say Wow that is so much of a dedication! My longest spree with Linux until I go back to Windows was I think 8 or 9 years my friend. 😖😎

Ummm.
This is a hard thing to discuss as like others have said there are certain tools I also use for business that require windows and wine isn't good enough nor is running them on a type 2 VM. However, on the discovery of qubes and running vms at type 1 using xen I am not able to use a windows virtual with graphics tools using GPU passthrough. So I am literally permanently on Linux now via qubes so fedora, debian, arch, windows and many others all on type 1 VM. If I can also setup for gaming on windows ill be sorted but waiting to get new desktop for that with a 4090 instead of my current 3070ti ![]() The Brotherhood Vibe Legends (Jun 9, 2024 11:23 PM)7 Wrote: Ummm. As a matter of fact, I have used qubes before and it is really awesome to use as you can segregate each nodes and has complete isolation over the others. I think if its all about personal and work matters, linux really works best but if you ought to play games on a gaming machine then Windows os would be awe so fine. 🙃 (Jun 13, 2024 12:18 AM)jm0524895 Wrote: I use both Linux and windows. I began using Linux as my main OS during my first year at college. 2006 I think? For most of that time it was either Ubuntu or Debian.
I've played around with a number of other distros, but I'm happy with plain old Debian! (Jun 13, 2024 08:03 PM)jm0524895 Wrote: yes and also I use virtual machines as well. I think I'm at just over 4 years with Linux as my primary OS. I've distro hopped quite a bit, but finally landed on Debian and it's been spectacular. I do unfortunately still use Windows every single day for work. My company runs on it, so there's not much I can do there.
