Samantha Peterson was under the influence of a drug when her vehicle hit the buggy, killing two children, authorities said.
A Minnesota woman who allegedly urged her twin sister to take responsibility for a deadly SUV crash into an Amish buggy in 2023 was sentenced this week to four years in state prison.
Minnesota District Court Judge Jeremy Clinefelter sentenced the admitted driver, Samantha Peterson, on Thursday and also ordered her to pay nearly $40,000 in restitution, according to his sentencing memo for the case.
Peterson pleaded guilty in July to criminal vehicular homicide under the influence and criminal vehicular operation under the influence, NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis reported. Clinefelter ordered the sentences — four years and two years, respectively — to be served concurrently.
Authorities said Peterson was driving an SUV while high on methamphetamine after work on Sept. 25, 2023, when she rear-ended a horse-drawn buggy near Spring Valley, a small city about 114 miles south of Minneapolis.
Two sisters in the buggy, ages 7 and 11, ultimately died, while two other siblings survived with injuries, authorities said.
Authorities alleged that Samantha Peterson summoned her identical twin sister, Sarah, to the crash site, and that the sisters conspired to have Sarah Peterson take responsibility before they could determine exactly who was behind the wheel.
After considering evidence from search warrants, location data from Samantha Peterson’s cellphone and a phone call from her employer, deputies concluded she was driving and pushed for conviction, Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge said at a news conference in early 2024.
“We started to determine that in fact Samantha was the sister that was coming from Rochester driving southbound at the time of the crash, not Sarah,” DeGeorge said.
The sheriff said the road where the crash took place, Fillmore County Road 1, is shared by buggies and has signs warning drivers of the slow traffic, so drivers must be extra careful.

I mean my friend, a loving husband and father, the most gentle man was killed by a drunk driver who had so many drunk driving charges that his license had been taken away. My friend was 50. And this happened like three months after my own husband had a sudden death, so then my kids had to hear "Ben's daddy died." on top of that and my younger son covered his ears when my friends mentioned that.
The drunk driver with no license got two and a half years for killing my friend who was just biking home from work. He probably didn't even serve all of that. Society gives a pass because excess alcohol consumption is so heavily encouraged by society as it makes some people very rich.
I feel a bit bad because he had a crush on me and I kept side stepping that because I preferred my husband out of our friend group, but he really was a sweet heart of a man. Both great men that died relatively young.

Wow i'm really sorry to hear that to many people drive drunk and take innocent people's lives way to often and they don't seem to care or realize the long lasting effects it has on the persons remaining family/spouse/children. Don't even get me started on our justice system always giving a free pass to people who don't deserve it especially people who've taken somebody's life whether it be by accident or not because they willingly choose to drive drunk when they could've taken an uber, cab, public transport, or even walked. I was never a drinker so whenever i went out with friends i was always the designated driver and they loved that since i was the only one not drinking and was always able to drive and care for them. It's so much easier to not drive drunk than it is to drive drunk but people obviously don't think clearly while drinking.

I found out why the identical twin agreed to take the fall. Apparently, she had promised to do her sister a favour for looking after her kids when SHE was in prison. This was too big a craazy fucking favour. And now she's probably going back to prison for perjury, contempt of court and parole violations.
Guess she thought she was smarter than everyone else—didn’t work out too well.

Wut?
4 years is too easy. Does not matter who takes the blame. Killed two children. Fucking disgusting.

Well I think it does matter. The other twin wasn't in the car and had nothing to do with killing the little kids. That woman got nearly twice as long as the man who killed my friend. And he already had a revoked license for repeated drunk driving.

Right in this case atleast it definitely does matter. Poor sister she really threw her life away for her sister's horrible actions.
