A fitting story to share ahead of the 4th July it seems...

4chan's lawyer has turned the UK's attempts to fine 4chan under the Online Safety Act (a new dumbass UK law) into a running joke.

Instead of complying with the UK regulator's (Ofcom) demands, they've been responding by sending pictures of cartoon hamsters.



The actual legal point is pretty straightforward: UK law does not apply in the United States

The First Amendment protects platforms operating on American soil from foreign censorship orders, so Ofcom's fines and demands are unenforceable there.

The good boys behind "The Pirate Bay" pulled off a similar prankyful reply scheme when the US sent them takedown requests years ago.

I think it was "Go sodomize yourselves with a retractable baton" or something along those lines. They also replied with massive PDF files with pictures. 😄

The hamster reply is a cuter form of talkbackery in my opinion.

Although the UK has some of the world's most ridiculous online content laws, they need to know they can only enforce those laws within the EU at best. American platforms, as well as its users, are still protected under the Constitutions first amendment right: the right to free speech whether the UK likes it or not. You cannot censor a country that has anti-censorship enshrined in its constitution. Too bad the EU has such draconian laws because they are so scared of the general population and their opinions that they will do anything to stifle free speech. The EU is no democracy, never will be, and Queen Ursula isn't even an elected figure. Don't even get me started on this topic.......
