Ubuntu is switching its X Windows System to Wayland

Take a look at this:

😯

It's a big change, but it does seem promising.
Lol this is stupid, because nvidia/ati drivers etc are not even perfect for the X display.
Imagine the next ubuntu... no games, movies or compositing. fail.

About fucking time. X is a shitpile? It's good to see the UNIX community is finally working that fact out.

I lol when people tell me X is great because of its client/server architecture. It's not a bad idea per se, but X implemented it in a piss poor manner, as the link above shows. The fact that link is so old yet completely applicable shows how little X has progressed over the years.

True, but X is terrible and needs to go. Given how large of a following ubuntu has, it's possible nvidia will develop drivers for wayland as well.

Ati is fucked, as usual.

I was about to agree with you and say they could follow the bandwagon, coincidently i just spotted this on kernel.net:

Quote:With the current flurry of excitement over the announced aim of Ubuntu the current X server with the promising ‘Wayland’ display server in the near future, NVidia have decided to join in the jamboree by stating their intentions on delivering support for it.

Put simply by NVidia spokesman AaronP : -

"We have no plans to support Wayland."

I think that the fact wayland requires kernel mode setting (i read somewhere last week), its scaring off propietary companies such as nvidia, because they would need to open source their drivers completely so it would work with KMS.

Obviously, letting go of trade secrets in the process... i personally don't have a problem with restricted drivers per say. I would put commercial games + graphics card drivers under the same category requiring that it makes sense to "close source it".

I know there is nouveau, which i haven't bothered using because it lacks in so many ways. It mentions about nouveau on that blog post aswell, but i truely think it will not be a "satisfactory" driver for at least another 5 years or so.

But also im sure there will be a way in distributions to "prefer" X during install or after by simply replacing some packages if the default is to be wayland.
The major problem with X is that graphic card companies usually have to end up reimplementing a third of X's codebase just to get their cards to work.

Also, the network transparency isn't anywhere near as useful as, oh I don't know, videos that don't tear when moved, a sane configuration system, libraries that aren't useless piles of shit, and something that goes faster than an ant with all its legs burned off?

Seriously, the Linux community needs to get its priorities straight. Network transparency is a nice geek feature, nothing more. Yes, using remote desktop tools is unweildly, but having a GUI that actually works consistently, and works with modern media and modern H/W like Aero or Cocoa is a blessing compared to X, which should just die now.

A windowing system that's stuck in the '80s but allows a 16 year-old geek to connect xclock across a network, or a windowing system that can't do that, but is actually usable?

Most people fail to realize that the vast majority of Linux GUI programs don't work with X's network transparency properly anyway, so it's irrelevant.

they wouldn't do it if it was going to be the downfall of their distro unsuprisingly they probably know more about what they are doing behind the scenes regarding these issues than you.

software/hardware companies never promise anything until they absolutely have to. "have to" being if ubuntu goes through with it and this is a success. right now all of this is mostly rumour so nobody is setting anything in stone. A recent example of this being the Linux steam port. (and yes that is coming too)
I just installed Ubuntu, this is a fail.

Oh well, it would have been nice. I -do- think that X needs to be replaced though, it's by far the worst part of using Linux.
