Plot: Japan is in a huge depression, families and businesses are going bankrupt. The fat cats in government are the reason for the countries $7 Trillion Dollar deficit and none of them plan to stop or own up to their crimes any time soon.
Akumetsu is the story of Hazama Shou, who defends his own view of justice in a vigilante manner while wearing a mask and calling himself Akumetsu. Shou embarks on a bloody slaughter of government officials in the name of Akumetsu to cleanse the filthy water from the stagnant pit that is Japan. Akumetsu tries to correct the corrupt Japanese government by acts of "terrorism" and eliminating the corrupt heads of government. His oath is “One man one kill” and no civilians are ever involved as casualties. “One man one kill”, for each government official he kills he also commits suicide and takes himself with the target. But no matter how many times or in how many ways he is killed he continues his rampage from beyond the grave, the question is… How?
Story: Akumetsu has absolutely amazing storytelling. In my opinion it has the mystery and intellect of Deathnote with the cold blooded violence of Elfen Lied. The story brings in to question the philosophy of “What is good? What is evil?” during the plot and seriously makes the audience reflect on these things.
The story consists of three major parts that all develop as the plot continues.
1 – Akumetsu cleansing the Japanese government
2 – The people trying to understand Akumetsu and/or stop him
3 – The revelation of who is Akumetsu and how he came to be
I give the storytelling an easy 9/10. It was simple excellent and I never tired of seeing all the ingenious plans Akumetsu comes up with to slaughter his targets. The only downside I can see to this story is that after a while the repetitiveness of the killing government officials can get a little tedious but It gets better soon after.
Art: The art gets a 9/10 from me. The style is really well done and the detail suits a Seinen manga very well. The violent scenes are really easy to understand and the art style makes them impressive. You won’t find much moe in this series but the female characters are still sexy.
Characters: 10/10 without a doubt. All the characters develop throughout the story and you find a lot about their nature and deep emotions. You find out what drives them, what they think of Akumetsu and why they are for or against his action as well as their pasts. This gives the characters and excellent depth in the story and really makes the difference.
In conclusion I will give this series a 9/10 in total. It is serious, funny, witty, smart, violent, and sexy and will leave you wanting to read the next chapter always even if you need to sleep. The only thing that doesn’t make me give this a 10/10 is the slight repetitiveness towards the middle of the manga.
