1. Introduction

What the fuck is Backtrack? can you eat it?

BackTrack is an operating system based on the Ubuntu GNU/Linux distribution aimed at digital forensics and penetration testing use. It is named after backtracking, a search algorithm. The current version is BackTrack 5, code name "Revolution."

you can say that it's an operating system for hackers, geeks, and forensic investigators not really an os for "normal" people for "normal" users i recommend ubuntu

Virtualbox???

Oracle VM VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization software package, originally created by software company Innotek GmbH, purchased by Sun Microsystems, and now developed by Oracle Corporation as part of its family of virtualization products. It is installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional guest operating systems, each known as a Guest OS, can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment.

Emulated environment

Multiple guest OSs can be loaded under the host operating system (host OS). Each guest can be started, paused and stopped independently within its own virtual machine (VM). The user can independently configure each VM and run it under a choice of software emulation or hardware assisted emulation if the underlying host hardware supports this. The host OS and guest OSs and applications can communicate with each other through a number of mechanisms including a common clipboard and a virtualized network facility provided. Guest VMs can also directly communicate with each other if configured to do so.

why do i need virtualbox? i just need backtrack???

true, but this is an tutorial on how to make backtrack run in a virtual environment without completely delete your windows (you can make a live cd/usb but.... ok just move on 😖)

2. Requirement

this is what i use there other ways to do it but in this tutorial i use a Windows Machine.

backtrack 5 R1 [http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/]
Virtualbox [https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads]

3. Explanation

download and install virtualbox

download backtrack5 R1

Notice.

use the right configuration 32 bit or 64 bit gnome or kde? etc..

open virtualbox and press new a new window will pop open click next

give your new virtual backtrack a name (backtrack5 R1 or,..) take Linux as operating system and other Linux as version press next

now you need to assign the ram to your new virtual backtrack don't go in red give it at least 1.5GB (2GB recommended) press next ;)

start up hard disk,new hard disk and just press next the basic volume is around 8GB and press next again (we are almost done)

the next steps are quite easy just press next until the end =) (you can change the hard disk size and the type but leave it as default)
now click create and your first guest OS wil appear

now select your virtual machine and press start =)

ok now you need to do the first start up an assistant will pop up the first time pres next now you select your image file (the . ISO you downloaded from the backtrack site) after you selected your file you press open and then next.

now just press next next and next after it's done a boot thing will show up just press enter here and finally you have you're backtrack installed enjoy =)

now you can follow the install instructions, manual on the backtrack forums please share youre experience in the comments below still has some questions contact the support ;)

I have a question:
i run BT under VB and i want to save my documents. I made a shared fodler on g: but everytime i want to save something there is nothing
What do i have to write?
I do so: set OUTFILE G:/BT/forexample.txt
BT says: no such file or directory
Where is the failure?
