So anyone have any suggestions on what compiler i should use? C not C++ but it's better if it can compile both?

Microsoft Visual C++ (use the /Tc flag), GCC.

What operating system do you have? GCC works on Windows, and if you have a Mac, GCC comes preinstalled.

Just get GCC. Free, open source, widely supported, great documentation.
